A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 8

It has been lovely to welcome students back to school after the half-term break. Spring feels like it is almost sprung and it is nice to have lighter mornings and evenings. I hope that everybody is refreshed after the break! On the subject of refreshing, please can parents and carers perform a stationery check, at this time of year those gleaming new pencil cases that were bulging with equipment in September are now likely to be somewhat depleted. On top of the usual pens, pencils and ruler, please ensure your child has a purple pen (used for self-assessment of classwork) and a whiteboard pen (used for quick assessments of learning in the lesson). Thank you for your support. Our Year 8 Netball team showed great teamwork and resilience in their match against Orleans Park on Tuesday. We were defeated on this occasion - but our Captain Daisy G was very proud of the team. Bella F was awarded player of the match. Well done! Please remind your child that they can be awarded epraise both in lessons and form times for: working collaboratively, great work and homework, supporting each other, engagement in class activities, helping in the classroom, and supporting the teacher/ tutor. On Tuesday our Year 8 assembly was led by Ms Lane and the topic was St David’s Day. St David’s Day takes place on 1st March each year and is a celebration of Wales’ patron saint, St David, and Welsh culture. Ms Lane reflected on what makes her proud to be welsh, sharing a great story about her home club, Swansea FC, who came together as a community to support and fund this very small club. Their hard work and determination paid off when were promoted to the Premier League in 2011- 12 season, the first Welsh team to play in the division since its formation in 1992! It is always great to hear how the power of sport can bring communities together and it is teamwork along with determination and resilience that can be applied in school. Looking ahead, students are reminded to bring in a reading book for silent reading during form time on Mondays as we are dedicating this time for students to read independently. Year 8 are also reading Pride and Prejudice and discussing each chapter and the characters and storyline with their form team each week.

Looking forward to another great half-term!

BOOK OF THE MONTH

‘My name is Mina’ by David Almond

In the form of a journal, this book is a prequel for the book Skellig, and focuses on the character Mina before she has met Michael and Skellig. It focuses on her troubles with school and family and shines a light on her creativity. It is a fun, but serious book all at the same time and has many different forms of creativity like poetry and made-up stories. Overall, it’s a very personal and emotive tale, with lots of much needed honesty about school and the stories that are missed of kids who struggle in school. - Isabelle H, Y11
