THE LAKES CLASSROOM STANDARD
Digital organisation: •
Every classroom at The Lakes reflects: Calm professionalism — routines, respect, and readiness.
Use consistent naming conventions for files and Compass learning tasks (e.g., Y8 English – Persuasive Writing – Week 3). • Keep your Compass pages tidy — no clutter or outdated posts. • Back up critical files and share unit plans in team folders. • Routines that Anchor Learning • Predictability is a gift to every learner — especially those who thrive on structure or experience anxiety. • Establish early and model often: • Clear start-of-lesson routine (e.g., line up - entry greeting → settle → review yesterday’s learning). • End-of-lesson routine (e.g., recap, pack-up, exit). • Explicit expectations for transitions, equipment use, and group work. • Visual timetables or slides to reduce cognitive load. • Quick, visible signals (countdowns, hand raises, timers) to manage attention. A few directives to help: • Pin boards, blu tack and velcro dots are ideal for display purposes • No sticky tape or velcro dots on the windows or walls • No drawing pins in the walls • No glue on walls or windows • Lock all windows and doors at the end of the day • Check that papers, pencils and books are picked up from the floor and underneath tables • All chairs need to be tucked under tables at the end of the day • Electronic equipment must be turned off and not left next to external windows. Lights and fans/air conditioners need to be turned off • All laptops/digital equipment must be stored in secure areas.
Visible learning — goals, progress, and reflection made explicit.
Strong partnerships — regular, respectful communication.
Belief in growth — every interaction reinforces that all students can improve with effort and feedback. • When we teach, speak, and organise with intention, learning becomes inevitable. • An organised space communicates expectations before you speak. It shows students that learning matters and that their environment is safe, predictable, and respected. Physical setup that supports learning: • Clear lines of sight: all students should see you and the board without turning their bodies. • Defined learning zones: a space for group work, a calm corner for reflection, and a clear teaching zone. • Traffic flow: keep entry, exits, and high-traffic areas (like stationery or bins) clutter-free. • Wall displays: use displays to celebrate current learning, anchor vocabulary, and show learning progressions — not just decoration. • Accessibility: keep resources within easy reach. Label shelves and tubs with visuals for quick access and student ownership. • Lighting & seating: natural light and flexible arrangements support attention and comfort. Adjust for collaborative or quiet work as needed.
