SURFACE PREPARATION There are different methods of preparing your timber prior to applying a clear finish. This will depend on the condition and coating on your timber. To produce a piece of furniture with a truly professional look and feel there are a number of important steps to take during preparation and finishing.

APPLYING THE FINISH 1. Apply 2 or 3 generous coats with a fine bristled brush, applicator pad, spray gun or lambswool applicator. 2. On new timber, thin the first coat up to 5%. No thinning is required for subsequent coats. 3. Apply evenly over the surface finishing with brush strokes or chosen application method along the grain. 4. When covering large areas take care to maintain a “wet edge” and do not go back over the clear finished surface once the film has set. 5. Sand back to original timber surface, and thoroughly clean before staining. Sand back to original timber surface, and thoroughly clean before staining. Fill any holes or cracks with a suitable timber putty. Sand the surface with 40-80 grit sandpaper prior to smooth sanding with 120-240 grit paper.

SURFACE PREPARATION There are different methods of preparing your timber prior to staining. This will depend on the condition and coating on your timber. 1. Timber floors must be sanded back to bare timber. 2. Ensure that your timber is dry and free from any wax, grease and dust. 3. Coarse sand the surface to prepare with 40-80 grit paper. 4. Then smooth sand with 120-240 grit paper. 5. Vacuum off all dust. Leave overnight to allow airborne particles to settle and vacuum again. 6. Wipe down with a damp lint free cloth and allow to dry. HANDY HINTS Always test the colour on an off cut or an out of sight area before beginning. If the colour is too strong it may be diluted with water. If the temperature is above 25 º C, add up to 10% water to the flooring stain. This will increase the open time making the product easier to apply. Floor Stain Liming White may discolour on some tannin rich timbers and Cypress Pine. Check for discolouration before beginning.

APPLYING THE FINISH 1. Pour Floor Stain into a paint roller tray and apply with a lambswool floor applicator. 2. Apply the Floor Stain along the length of the floor boards, working on an area 3 boards wide (this will provide the best finish). 3. Apply quickly and evenly along the full length of 3 boards. 4. Once the length of 3 boards has been covered, lightly wipe along the full length of the boards with the applicator or a clean cloth to remove excess stain and achieve even coverage. 5. Start the process again at the next boards adjacent to the starting point. 6. Ensure that you finish at an appropriate exit point to avoid walking over freshly stained timber. 7. Allow to dry for 3 hours and then apply Estapol 7008, Estapol Moisture Cure Polyurethane or Estapol Speed Clear Gloss or Satin as a topcoat.
