SURFACE PREPARATION There are different methods of preparing your timber prior to staining. This will depend on the condition and coating on your timber. 1. Ensure that your timber is dry and free from any wax, grease and dust. 2. Coarse sand the surface to prepare with 120 grit paper 3. Final sand with up to 400 grit paper. Always sand in the direction of the timber grain. 4. Remove all dust. 5. If an even smoother surface is desired, Wattyl Grain Filler will fill timber grain to a perfectly smooth finish

APPLYING THE STAIN 1. Apply Wattyl Craftsman Traditional Stain liberally with a soft cloth, pad or clean brush. 2. Wipe lightly along the grain with a clean soft cloth to even out the stain. If applied too sparingly, streaking may result. 3. On large jobs stain one surface at a time so that the stain does not dry before excess is removed. One application is usually sufficient. 4. The stain can be recoated in 4 hours. In cooler conditions, allow longer drying time. 5. Further coats will darken the colour and mask the grain. 6. Finish with Wattyl Estapol Polyurethane, Wattyl Estapol Water Based Xtra Clear, Wattyl Estapol 7008, Wattyl Estapol Moisture Cure Polyurethane or Wattyl Estapol Oil Modified Polyurethane.

HANDY HINTS Remember, the final colour achieved will vary with application technique, timber type and clear finish used. Always test the colour first on a timber off-cut or section of the job which does not show. If the stain colour is too strong, dilute with Wattyl Traditional Stain Reducer. Where more than one can is required to complete the job, combine all cans in a clean metal container and stir well before using. Protect your hands by wearing appropriate rubber gloves.
