HOW TO APPLY WATTYL PREPARATORY PRODUCTS } Preparation is the most important step in ensuring that your timber project has the best possible finish. Our preparation guide will give you information on sanding, using putty and grain filler. PROJECT USAGE GUIDE

SANDING Thoroughly sand the surface to prepare it with 60-120 grit sandpaper working along the grain, not across the grain and gradually introduce a finer (up to 400 grit) sandpaper to finish. Handy Hint: exert even pressure with sandpaper and gradually reduce to a finer 400 grit paper. WHEN TO USE A TIMBER PREPARATION PRODUCT A suitable timber putty should be used to fill gaps, nail holes or cracks in the grain. Application Steps: 1. Press the putty lightly into position with a finger or putty knife. Leave a little standing above the surface. 2. Allow to dry before sanding smooth. Wattyl Grain Filler should be used on open grained timbers such as Maple, Walnut or Cedar to achieve a perfectly smooth surface. Application Steps: 1. Apply Grain Filler with a piece of hessian or coarse cloth. 2. Rub well into the timber grain using a circular motion. 3. Allow to dry for 5 to 8 minutes until the “wet look”disappears. 4. Remove excess Grain Filler by rubbing across the grain with a clean piece of hessian or coarse cloth. 5. Finish by rubbing lightly along the grain to remove any cross streaks. 6. Do not sand. 7. Allow to dry a minimum of 24 hours before coating.

Wattyl Sanding Sealer should be used to effectively seal and fill the grain of untreated timber surfaces and raises the grain for easier sanding. Application steps: 1. Stir thoroughly before and during use with a flat stirrer. 2. Apply one coat direct from the can using a quality brush, roller or spray gun. 3. Allow 3 hours to dry, then sand lightly in the direction of the grain with fine sandpaper before applying the required finishing coats.
