SURFACE PREPARATION There are different methods of preparing your timber prior to staining. This will depend on the condition and coating on your timber. 1. Ensure that your timber is dry and free from any wax, grease and dust. 2. Coarse sand the surface to prepare with 120 grit paper. 3. Final sand with up to 400 grit paper. Always sand in the direction of the timber grain. 4. Remove all dust. 5. Nail holes or cracks should be filled with with a suitable timber putty in a in a matching timber colour. 6. Allow to dry and sand smooth. HANDY HINTS On large areas, stain one section at a time to ensure the stain does not dry before the excess is removed. If a completely smooth, even surface is desired, fill open grained timbers with Wattyl Grain Filler in a matching colour, as per label directions.
APPLYING THE STAIN 1. Apply Colourwood Interior Stain liberally with a lint free, clean cloth pad, rubbing the stain in with a circular motion. 2. Allow to stand for 1-3 minutes before removing the excess by vigorously wiping along the grain with a clean cloth. 3. One coat only is required. Further coats will darken the colour and may mask the timber grain. 4. Allow to dry for 4 hours and then apply a Wattyl Estapol Finish as a topcoat to provide protection, true colour and the desired gloss level.
