SURFACE PREPARATION There are different methods of preparing your timber prior to staining. This will depend on the condition and coating on your timber. 1. Ensure that your timber is dry and free from any dirt, grease or wax. 2. Fill nail holes or cracks with with a suitable timber putty in a matching timber colour. Allow it to dry. 3. Coarse sand the surface to prepare with 120 grit paper. 4. Final sand with up to 400 grit paper. Always sand in the direction of the timber grain. 5. Remove all dust and ensure the timber is dry and clean before applying your stain and varnish. WHICH SHOULD I USE? SOLVENT BASED OR WATER BASED? Solvent based varnishes are especially suited for use on darker timbers. Water based varnishes are good for lighter coloured timbers, and have the added benefits of quick dry times, easy clean up and low odour. HANDY HINTS Before application test the colour on a timber off-cut or section of the job which does not show.
APPLYING THE FINISH 1. Where more than one can of stain is required to complete a job, combine all contents of cans in a clean container and stir well before using. 2. Apply an even coat with a brush or applicator pad. To deepen the colour apply additional coats of Wattyl Stain & Varnish allowing it to dry. Sand lightly and dust off between coats. 3. If the desired colour is achieved in one coat allow it to dry and then apply one or two coats of Estapol Water Based Xtra Clear or Estapol Polyurethane over the Stain & Varnish to achieve the required film-build and gloss level.
