ers. If this fact is remembered, it will give peculiar force and meaning to what they said, “ On earth peaee, good will toward men” (v. 14). The great Sovereign of the universe had come down to earth accompanied and escorted by His armies. To a rebel wprld, we might have expected them to come in judgment, but instead they came with a message of peace. How amazing is His grace! Golden Text Illustration L uke 2:14 A young clergyman came home from the mission field to see his father, who was very ,ill. The World War was then at its height, and during his home stay, a new detachment of troops left his city for France: There was the usual passionate, almost strained enthusiasm, and as the train pulled out, the. streets rang with the familiar, “Give ’em hell.” And so the-' went. Then came the day o f parting between father and son. The young man was saying his last farewell. Father and son clasped each other’s hand, looked into each other's face as only those in the presence of eternity may look, and as the train moved out, the old man murmured, like a benediction: "Give ’em Christ, lad; give ’em Christ.” —The Sunday School Times. method, believers today may share the shepherds’ joy. Points and Problems 1. “ The angel of the Lord came upon them” (Lk. 2:9). .Translate “an angel” instead of “the angel of the Lord.” There is no definite article in the Greek, and this omission1involves a very im- Dortant doctrinal point. “The angel of the Lord,” who appears so often in the Old Testament, was none other than the Second Person of the Triune God, our Lord Jesus Christ in His preincarnate state. Obviously, therefore, that angel who announced His birth could not have been “the angel of the Lord,” , for the latter had taken human form by virgin birth and was at the very moment pf the angelic announcement “lying in a manger.” 2. “The glory of the Lord” (v. 9). This peculiar “glory,” so familiar to the reader of the Old Testament, and which is known as the Shekinah glory, was always closely associated with the Sec ond Person of the Godhead. There was a sound reason for this association. Whenever the invisible God spoke or manifested Himself to men, it was al ways through His eternal Son who in the Old Testament is called both “ the angel of Jehovah” and “Jehovah.” Therefore, it should not surprise us to find that, when God manifested Him self in permanent human form and na ture, the Shekinah glory appeared once more to men. The writer of Hebrews, speaking of Christ, says that He is “the brightness of his glory” (1:3), that is, the outshining of God’s glory. And the Apostle John associates Christ, with the Shekinah glory when he writes of Him, “Esaias . . . saw ,his glory, and spake of him” (John 12:41). 3. “ For unto you is born” (v. 11). This is an echo of the great prophecy of Isaiah which reads, “For unto us a child is bom, unto us a son is given” (9:6). The pronoun “us” refers to Israel. And we Gentiles should never forget, as some are forgetting today, that Christ came first of all to fulfill the divine promises to His chosen ■peo ple of Israel. 4. “The heavenly -host” (v. 13). This expression, which should be familiar to those who read the Old Testament, de scribes the military forces of heaven, the armies of God, not a choir of sing
