King's Business - 1926-11

November 1926 B U S I N E S S sings “ spiritual songs” (Eph. 6:19; Col. 3 :16 ). All this is possible by means of the Holy Spirit, for it is only as we are filled with Him, that we are spiritual. The same applies to what follows: 1. A sanctified spirit is Assured in Relationship. The Spirit beareth witness with our spirit” (Rom. 8:16). He assures us we are the children of God by obedience, even as the clean mirror reveals the person who is looking into it. 2. A sanctified spirit is Confident in Faith. “ The same spirit of faith” (2 Cor. 4:13). When our spirit relies on the Word of God we have the Lord of the Word speaking in our hearts to our joy, and our testimony has the ringing note of confidence to others’ conviction, even as the reflected face is seen in the clear lake telling of the presence of the one who is beside it. 3. A sanctified spirit is Joyful in God. “ My Spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour” (Luke 1:47). The sanctified spirit does not rejoice in Its joy, nor in its experience, nor in its service, nor in its circumstances, but in the Lord of the Joy, for He is the center of everything, even as the hub of the wheel keeps all the spokes in touch with the rim and holds all together. 4. A sanctified spirit is Poor in Disposition. "Blessed are the poor in spirit" (Matt. 5 :3 ). To be poor in one’s own estimation does not mean to be poor in character. One of the richest men in Glasgow said to the writer: “ I can never get beyond ‘God be merciful to me a sinner’ when I think of myself.” 5. A sanctified spirit is Fervent in Devotion. “ Fervent in spirit” (Rom. 12:11; Acts 18:25). The fervency of zeal’s ardour, of love’s passion, of intercession’s pleading, and of earnestness’ glow, indicate some of the vehemency of the devotion of a fervent spirit. 5. A sanctified spirit is Earnest in Prayer. Paul in sum ming up the secret of his ministry says: “ * • * God, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of His Son, that without

There are so many stars in the sky of this realm, that suggestion only must suffice. A Sanctified Spirit A “ sanctified spirit” is one who is spiritual in tone and temper. The unsaved have the spirit-nature of the self- consciousness of being, but they are not spiritual. Neither is the “ soulish” saint spiritual. He is “ carnal.” Hence, the Apostle could not speak to the "saints” in Corinth as “ spiritual” (1 Cor. 3 :1 ). A spiritual believer is supplied by "spiritual blessings” (Eph. 1 :3 ), enjoys "spiritual understanding” (Col. 1 :9 ), offers up “ spiritual sacrifices” (1 Pet. 2 :5 ), communicates “ spiritual things by spiritual means” (Darby’s Translation of 1 Cor. 2:13 ), discerns things from a spiritual standpoint (1 Cor. 2:16 ), desires spiritual gifts (1 Cor. 14:1), and
