Spirit. When this sanctification is wanting the Spirit is needed. A Sanctified Soul We shall need to recall what is meant by the soul. Some times the soul means the individual man as a spirit; some times the life which animates the body, which makes it a living entity; sometimes the internal quality of what the individual is in the inness of his being; and sometimes it is the expression or the manifestation of his life without. This fourfold meaning may be said to apply to the whole of a sanctified soul, even as an altar with its four sides make up the whole, yet each side may be distinguished. 1. A sanctified soul is a Dependent Soul. "Take no thought for your life” (Matt. 6 :26 ). The word “ life” is the same as “ soul.” For though no anxiety is to be taken ("thought” is an old English word for “ anxiety” ; hence, we read in history of a man who “ died of thought”— anxiety is meant.) For our life, we are to be concerned to seek the Kingdom of God first. If we make God’s concerns ours, He will make our concerns His. 2. A sanctified soul is a Selflab Soul. "He that loveth his life shall lose it, and he that hateth his life in this world, shall keep it unto life eternal” (John 12:26). “ Life” occurs three times in the above, but two different words are used in the original. In the first two instances, the word is “ psuche” and in the last word it is “ zoe." The first word is used of the soul, and in this- instance the soul signifies self. The center of a soulish life is self, as evidenced in the rich fool (Luke 12:16-34),— while a selfless life is a life in union with Christ. 3. A sanctified soul is a Rested Soul. “ Ye shall find rest to your soul” is Christ’s promise to those who are yoked with Him in God’s will (Matt. 11:29). When our hearts are poised in God’s will, we find peace in the Lord Himself. We do not seek rest,— it seeks us, if we keep in step with Christ. Frets do not find us, nor cares cark us, nor irks irk us, for we have a “ peace which passeth all understand- (Continued on page 690)
ceasing I make mention of you always in my prayers” (Rom. 1 :9 ). The oil that lubricated the machinery of his service was his heart communion with the Lord in it.- 7. A sanctified spirit is Fresh in Quality. “ Newness of Spirit” (Rom. 7 :6 ). The outward letter of the law was not the sample of his imitation, but the new principle of life in Christ, which moved and moulded him, even as the electric saw of a timber merchant in cutting timber is distinct from the laborious effort of a hand saw. 8. A sanctified spirit is Determined in Service. Paul “ purposed in the spirit,” or "in his own mind” as Scofield (Acts 19:21), when he believed a certain course of action was according to the Lord’s mind; then he acted accord ingly, even as Moses built the Tabernacle according to the plan which was shown him in the mount. 9. A sanctified spirit is Bold in Testimony. Those who were antagonistic to Stephen “ were not able to resist the wisdom and spirit by which he spake” (Acts 6:10 ). Like an avalanche of snow which sweeps everything in its onward rush, so he overcame all opposition. 10. A sanctified spirit is Meek in Temper. The one quali fication to restore a brother who has stumbled is to have “ a spirit of meekness” (Gal. 6 :1 ). Meekness is the meet- ness for such service, even as the finely tempered surgical instrument in the hand of a skilled surgeon is the essential for a delicate operation. 11. A sanctified spirit is "Constrained by The Word.” Paul was "pressed in spirit,” or as R. V. constrained by the Word” (Acts 18:6). Every true ministry is limited and located by the Word of Reconciliation (2 Cor. 6:14 ), even as a messenger with a message has to deliver the same as commissioned to him. 12. A sanctified ' spirit is Stirred by Sin. When Paul looked upon the idolatry in Athens, his "spirit was stirred in him” (Acts 17:16).’ He did not allow the sin to go unre buked, nor was he unconcerned by its doings, but seized the opportunity to preach Christ To have this sanctified spirit we need the Sanctifying
