Science and the Bible by Bolton Davidheiser Chairman. Science Division Biola

For almost % o f a century, this Mission has proclaimed the Gospel on Manhattan’s fabled East Side. Ministries: Mission services; open-air meetings; hospital and home visitation; Scripture distribu tion; family counseling and aid.

College magazine, and presently said, “Now I am mad.” The first woman was not sufficiently interested to inquire what made her mad, but it may have been another article, in which a father advised his son to have pre-marital relations with his girl friend. He is sure his son will never marry the girl. She is going to attend a dis tant college. He believes that eventu ally each of them will marry some one else, but he thinks that their marriages will be happier if they have such experiences now. We pass by some osage trees. The leaves have fallen and fruit still on the trees is quite prominent. The woman with the children remarks about the trees with oranges. The other woman says they cannot be oranges, because oranges do not grow here, and she suggests that maybe they are pears. The magazine also contains a story about a missionary in Africa who spent 25 years on the field without a furlough. When the denomination wished to raise more money for mis sions, a telegram was sent request ing that she return immediately by plane to represent the African field. She planned to purchase new clothes in New York, but because of delays in traveling she arrived j'ust in time to attend the meeting in her home made African costume. It so hap pened that' this was just like the latest style from Paris’ This nearly disrupted the meeting, because the church people rebelled at the thought of supporting a missionary who in dulged in expensive Paris fashions. But the truth became known and she was forgiven. The subsequent ball and banquet, featuring champagne and socialites, was a big success. Among other remarkable things in the magazine was a “ filler” from real life about a woman who explained that she deliberately sang off key in church to show her contempt for the pastor. Confusing gourds with lemons and confusing osage “ oranges” with real oranges are, at a distance, harmless mistakes ; but articles of the kind carried by that popular magazine do much harm, and they illustrate the trends of the times. As Cicero said, “ O temporal 0 mores” (0 the times! O the cus toms !)

O TEMPORA! O MORES! I N a TRAIN going across the country a woman with three small chil dren bought a magazine and present ly announced that it said that now doctors, educators, and clergymen say that children should be given alcoholic drinks to protect them from becoming alcoholics, somewhat like giving vaccinations against small pox. Another woman said this could not be true because she knew a fam ily of alcoholics in which the chil dren drank when young. But the first woman was not listening, and said, “ I never thought of that before. It might be a good idea to souse them real good sometimes.” A purchase of the magazine re vealed that the author believes that young people will not be abstainers, and that they should be taught “ good drinking habits.” He thinks that it is unwise and out of date for parents and teachers to point out evils in drinking, because it is likely to make the children wish to try it out of sheer rebellious frustration. If young people are that rebellious and frus trated, something else is wrong. On this basis, parents would have to re frain from teaching their children that there is anything which is evil. The author says that young people with the “ soundest drinking habits” come from families where the par ents are able to “ take their liquor or leave it alone” and from families where abstaining parents can give clear and logical reasons for their abstaining. Apparently these clear and logical reasons are not good enough for the children. Wild gourds are growing on the banks by the train track. The vines are dead and the fruits are very conspicuous. The woman who is con sidering “ sousing” her children com ments on the small “watermelons.” The other woman says they cannot be watermelons because they are too small. On the other side of the aisle another woman tells her husband, “ There are thousands of lemons growing out there.” He says that can’t be, because lemons don’t grow in this part of the country. If he had looked out the window, he might have added that lemons don’t grow on vines. The second woman borrowed the
