Henry Chairman, History Department, Biola College Soviet Schooling Cut to 10 Years The Soviet Union announced re cently a reduction of its 11-year sys tem of primary and secondary edu cation to 10 years. The change is part of a new educational policy in tended to speed the entry of young people into the labor force. The So viet Government announced earlier this year that the four-year to five- year period of higher education would be reduced by one year. A de cree of the Soviet Communist party and the Government, made public recently, said the transition period to the new system was to be com pleted by the end of the 1965-66 school year. The decision meant in effect that the Soviet Union’s long- range goal of achieving 11 years of universal compulsory schooling by 1970 had been dropped. Ancient Gold Plates May be Key to Etruscan Language Italian archaeologists are studying three ancient gold plates, hoping to find a key to the language of the Etruscans, who populated Italy be fore the rise of Rome. The plates were found in excavations at the site of the old Etruscan city of Pyrgia, north of Rome. There has never been an adequate translation of Etruscan because of the lack of a key. Prof. Massimo Pallottino, who is conduct ing the excavations, recently said in Rome that two of the plates had in scriptions in Etruscan characters while the third had Carthaginian characters. If the Carthaginian writ ings should correspond to the text of the Etruscan inscriptions of the two other plates, experts believe the plates would serve to decipher the Etruscan.
