11. ENTERPRISE – The Enterprise of Annie Malone
The building was equipped with every modern convenience of the day, from a six-ton ice plant to automatic elevators that required no operator. The living quarters featured conveniences that everyone had access to: sleeping rooms and dining halls; health care and ped- icures; a bakery, a gymnasium, a laundry, a spa. Each morning the oldest Poro employee of them all, an 80-year-old veteran who fought for the Union Army in the Civil War, carefully carried the American flag and the Poro flag to the flagpole on the roof and proudly raised them high into the sky.
