11. ENTERPRISE – The Enterprise of Annie Malone
Every effort was made to see that all employees who worked at the college were treated with the greatest care to ensure they were com- fortable and well-trained. Annie wanted Poro agents to leave the college, start a business, and make enough to buy their own home. Despite being one of the wealthiest people in Missouri — her 1924 income tax was believed to be the highest in the state — Annie lived modestly and gave generously. She donated to the local Black YMCA, Howard University College of Medicine, and the St. Louis Colored Orphans Home, today known as the Annie Malone Children’s Home. But for all of Annie’s material successes, her proudest contribution was greater opportunity. Annie’s unyielding determination inspired nearly 75,000 women around the world. In her own words, she hoped her own story would be “i nspiring to those countless dreamers among us, some of whom have lacked the courage to venture, but who may read this little story and dare to do .”
