12. PERSUASION – The Persuasion of Marian Anderson

AFTERWORD Through the beauty of her voice, Marian both inspired and moti- vated people to help them get ahead. Whether she was singing in a church or in front of thousands, she did not tolerate medi- ocrity in herself. This was her inborn perfectionism she used to always strive to do better. It was made possible by her drive and a willingness to give it all she could to her artistry. Despite the bar- riers, Marian’s individualism allowed her to do things the way she thought they should be done without fearing others’ disapproval. And her willingness to take chances gave her the strength to over- come her fear of failure. These are two characteristics you have within you and can develop and use. As a performer, she was very good at getting her ideas across to others and using her ability to communicate . Look through the story and you will see examples of how she won valuable friends using her outgoingness . You will learn more about this trait in the next story. “ The most important thing is to try and inspire people so that they can be great in whatever they want to do.” – Kobe Bryant TO BE A GENIUS How did Marian motivate people to help them get ahead? What strong belief did she hold to help inspire others? What things do you really believe in? How can you use your strong beliefs to motivate others to help them get ahead?
