Eleanor and the commission took on the monumental task of finding common ground for everyone involved despite their dif- ferent languages, cultures, religions, governments, and even the definitions of words. It took six days to get an agreement on the first article alone. For this, much of the debate centered on the defi- nition of the word “dignity.” For nearly two years, such discussions continued article by article. Along the way, to ensure everyone could understand the ideas in the declaration, Eleanor insisted it be put into language “which could be readily understood by the ordinary man or woman. ”
