By this time, the Royal Society knew Leeuwenhoek to be a scien- tist of the highest order. His reports, as astonishing as they were, had to be believed. He would be recognized as the man who discov- ered the microscopic world, and for this, he received his greatest honor: being elected into the Royal Society on February 8, 1680.
