4. KNOWLEDGE – The Knowledge of Sor Juana Inés
As part of the royal court, word of Juana’s deep understanding of all things spread far and wide. But because women of this time were not supposed to be well-read and well-educated, many didn’t believe what they’d heard about this brilliant woman. This is how it came to be that forty of the most knowledgeable men in all of Mexico City — poets, mathematicians, historians, scientists, min- isters, and more — gathered in the palace to meet and test Juana. Each of these specialists threw questions at her, argued with her, and debated with her. Quickly, they discovered they had met their match. Using her courage (#2) and ability to communicate (#14) , she proved to be a great thinker and scholar .
