4. KNOWLEDGE – The Knowledge of Sor Juana Inés

Today, you can visit Juana’s hometown, renamed in her honor: Nepantla de Sor Juana de la Cruz. You can also study in the clois- ter where Juana lived, now a school in the heart of Mexico City and renamed the Universidad del Claustro de Sor Juana in her honor. In her longest and perhaps most famous poem, Primero Sueño (First Dream), Juana speaks from the heart about the human desire to know and understand the world. And it is from this poem, in two simple lines, that Juana herself may have best expressed her genius: : “ The only happiness I care to find derives from setting treasure in my mind.” —Sor Juana Inés .
