Jesse’s next attempt smashed the Olympic record by two inches. This left Luz with one more chance to pour everything he had into his final attempt. He gave it his all but fouled by stepping over the line. Even though he was now the winner, Jesse decided to take his final turn anyway. Jesse bolted down the runway, hit the board, and flew through the air. The entire stadium started cheering before he landed. As it was happening, everyone knew this was the best of the day. Jesse added 5 ½ inches to the Olympic record he set minutes earlier. As he climbed out of the sandpit, Luz ran to congratulate him, grabbed Jesse’s hand, and lifted their arms into the air. Together they trium- phantly paraded across the infield. As they made their way around the field, Luz shouted for all the world to hear, “Jesse Owens! Jesse Owens!” The crowd echoed Luz’s enthusiasm and chanted the American’s name over and over.
