6. OPTIMISM – The Optimism of Helen Keller
The day’s eventful lesson started as usual, with Sullivan intro- ducing a doll and the word d-o-l-l to her young pupil. Helen threw the doll to the floor, breaking it into pieces. Sullivan, undefeated, took Helen outside to the hand-pump water well next to the house. She placed one of Helen’s hands under the stream of water gush- ing from the well, and at the same time, she spelled w-a-t-e-r into Helen’s other hand.
