When Thato Kanjere walked across the stage to receive his degree from the University of Johannesburg (UJ), few could have predicted the remarkable trajectory his career would take. As an alumnus of UJ, Kanjiras’ journey from a dedicated student to a pioneering leader in the tech industry exemplifies the values of innovation, resilience, and community that the University stands for. Kanjiras’ path began in Sekhukhune in Limpopo, where he grew up surrounded by the vibrant culture and complex social dynamics of South Africa. His early years were marked by a keen interest in technology and its potential to affect meaningful change. This passion led him to UJ, where he pursued a degree in Information Management, setting the stage for what would become a trailblazing career. Thato Kanjiras’ journey from UJ to becoming a dynamic force in the UK is a story of ambition, leadership, and community engagement. As a distinguished alumnus and current UJ Convenor in the UK, Kanjere embodies the values of UJ through his professional achievements and dedication to connecting and empowering the UJ alumni network across continents.
DURING HIS TIME AT THE UNIVERSITY, KANJERE WAS MORE THAN JUST A STUDENT; HE WAS A BEACON OF INNOVATION AND LEADERSHIP. HIS COMMITMENT TO ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE WAS EVIDENT THROUGH HIS TOP-TIER PERFORMANCE IN HIS COURSEWORK, BUT IT WAS HIS EXTRACURRICULAR INVOLVEMENT THAT TRULY SET HIM APART.
Kanjere was deeply engaged in various student-led initiatives and tech-related projects, showcasing his passion for leveraging technology to address real-world challenges. He scored his first job with the South African Revenue Services (SARS) with the help and assistance of Prof Tanya du Plessis. “We became good friends from first year right up to my third year. She encouraged me to do my honours degree, and she was very instrumental in launching my career,” said Kanjere. Graduating with an Honours degree in Information Management, Kanjere entered the tech industry at a
