Regardless of the cause, there is irritation of the mucus membranes of the oral cavity resulting in ulceration & ____________ like lesions on & within the oral cavity. Predispositions include tooth abscess, viral infections such as rhinopneumonitis, overuse of bute or antibiotics, blister beetle poisoning, alkaloid plant toxicity and horses that feed off of rough pastures.
Transmission is environmental.
Signs & symptoms include drooling, anorexia, polydipsia, mouth-shy, mal-odour from the mouth, redness, swelling & tenderness of the mouth, blister formation, exudate formation and reluctance of being bridled.
Diagnosis includes oral exam, signs & symptoms and case history.
Treatment is aimed at correcting the underlying problem and providing symptomatic relief through rinsing the mouth, NSAIDs and feeding wet hay & soft feed. ________________ is a contagious viral disease that causes systemic signs, vesicles and ulcers in the mouth, on the udder/prepuce and on the coronary bands of the feet. It is transmitted through black flies and sandflies. It is a self-limiting disease, but horses should be isolated and there is a potential for zoonosis.
