abducted, reluctance to move, cough, pain on application of pressure to the thorax, dyspnea, exercise intolerance and poor performance. Diagnosis of pleuritis and pleuropneumonia is made through trans-tracheal aspirate, bronchial lavage, nasal swab, pleural aspiration, ultrasonography and auscultation revealing pleural effusion and the presence of bacteria in the thoracic cavity.
Treatment includes systemic antibiotics and NSAID’s and the
of effusion from
the pleural cavity.
Prognosis for horses affected by pleuritis is guarded if the pleural fluid does not contain fibrin. In more chronic cases where there is fibrous exudate present in the pleural cavity the prognosis is grave.
