Diagnosis can be made through clinical signs and symptoms, rectal palpation or ultrasound showing the presence of a cyst or cysts.

Treatment of ovarian cysts may include the manual

of the follicle or the

administration of

to trigger the regression of the follicle. If left untreated

most ovarian cysts will regress spontaneously but are likely to recur as the mare cycles.

Metritis

Acute puerperal metritis is a particular type of metritis that occurs shortly after

.

There are numerous pathogens that can lead to metritis. In many cases it is caused by the fungus Actinomyces pyogenes, which normally occurs in the vagina, or the bacteria E. Coli or psuedonomas spp. The fungus or bacteria is introduced into the uterus during the process of breeding or parturition. It then grows on the endometrial surface causing inflammation. Neutrophils infiltrate the uterus causing phagocytosis & damage to the uterine tissue and the formation and accumulation of pus inside the uterus.

Transmission is migration from the external environment or the vagina.

predisposes a mare to acute puerperal metritis as there is an increased chance of uterine contamination. Mares with repeated pregnancies are also predisposed as every breeding and foaling causes distortion & stretching of the cervix leading to scarring or fibrosis, therefore preventing it from forming a tight barrier. The clinical presentation of acute puerperal metritis includes depression, fever, anorexia, watery/purulent uterine discharge, estrous disruptions, physical changes of the reproductive tract and reduced lactation. Infertility maybe temporary or permanent depending on uterine changes. Diagnosis is made through culture from a uterine swab and the clinical signs and symptoms. Rectal palpation and uterine biopsy can be used to confirm. Treatment includes systemic antifungal or antibiotic medications, uterine lavage with antifungal/antibiotic preparations and the administration of systemic NSAID’s.

Prevention is hygiene during breeding & foaling.
