Cervical, Vaginal and Perianal Trauma

Cervical, vaginal and perianal trauma are caused by parturition.

The forceful contraction of the uterus forces the of the foal against the walls of the birth canal causing laceration, haemorrhage and contusion. Inflammation of the birth canal occurs as a result of trauma. Inflammation and laceration predispose the tissues of the birth canal to secondary bacterial infection. Large foals, fetal malpositioning, maiden mare and twin presentation all predispose for trauma to the birth canal. The clinical presentation includes edema of the vagina, vulva, clitoris and premium, pain on palpation of the vulva and serous or haemorrhagic from the vagina. Diagnosis is made through clinical signs and symptoms and rectal or vaginal palpation of the birth canal. Treatment includes the administration of NSAID’s, systemic antibiotics and the topical application of antibiotics. Large tears in the wall of the birth canal may require surgical repair.

Uterine Prolapse

Uterine prolapse is considered rare in mares compared to other livestock but is considered a medical emergency.

The cause of uterine prolapse is idiopathic but may be related to the

of the

mare during parturition.

Directly after parturition the cervix is dilated and the uterus is . Irritation from retained fetal membranes triggers the mare to strain and contract the uterus which may cause the uterine horns to invaginate as the membranes are expelled. The invagination of the uterine horn causes further irritation which stimulates further contraction that may force the uterus out of the pelvic cavity and out of the cervix.

Dystoicia, retained fetal membranes and positioning of the hindquarters forequarters during parturition all predispose a mare to uterine prolapse.

than the

The clinical presentation of uterine prolapse includes the protrusion of the uterus through the vagina and signs of pain or agitation.
