Weaving

Weaving is an intention movement.

This type of behaviour is usually triggered by stall confinement, separation anxiety or claustrophobia. The clinical presentation includes shifting of weight from one side to the other with no forward movement. Treatment includes weaving bars, increased turn out, increased contact with other horses, use of mirror or picture of horse, the use of thick bedding, rubber mats and protective boots to prevent injury and the administration of anti-anxiety medications.

Stall Walking, Fence Walking, Circling and Weaving

Stall walking, fence walking and circling are all examples of non-productive motor activity. This type of behaviour is usually triggered by separation anxiety or claustrophobia. The clinical presentation includes any repeated motion in a confined space such as a paddock, stall or trailer. A track is worn into the surface. Horses tend to be vocal and agitated. Treatment includes increased exercise, increased turn out, increased contact with other horses/companions, a change in location, the use of thick bedding, rubber mats and protective boots to prevent injury, use of mirrors or pictures and the administration of anti-anxiety medications.

Pawing

Pawing is a normal behaviour when horses are attempting to find feed/water, before rolling or in response to pain. It is considered abnormal when it is exhibited at an inappropriate time. It is usually caused by anticipation or frustration. Horses confined to a stall for much of the day or horses fed treats or other highly palatable feeds are predisposed to pawing. Excitement or anticipation of an event such as racing, or competition may also trigger pawing though this is a more appropriate display of the behaviour. Pawing is undesirable as it causes damage and wear to floor surfaces as well as the horse’s hooves or shoes. Pawing may be treated by counter conditioning or negative reinforcement. Rubber matting on floors may be used to prevent wear of the floor and the hooves or shoes.
