The past and the present celebrated a major achievement of the Rockland Nationals organization last week. Before the puck dropped for their Central Canada Hockey League (CCHL) matchup against the visiting Pembroke Lumber Kings on Friday, February 27 at the Clarence- Rockland Arena, the Nationals commemo- rated the 50th anniversary of the club’s Centennial Cup victory in 1976. It was a packed house for the event, where community leaders, dignitaries and hockey fans united for an evening of sharing memories and moments with each other. Some players from the 1976 team were on hand to share their experiences from the history making event. “Winning this national championship half a century ago, the team wrote an important chapter in our region’s sporting history,” said Clarence-Rockland Mayor Mario Zanth. “This achievement remains unique in our community.” The Nationals were crowned Centennial Cup champions in 1976 by defeating the Spruce Grove Melts four games to one. “It was a privilege to present certificates commemorating this incredible milestone and to celebrate a team that made such a lasting impact on their community,” said Stéphane Sarrazin, Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) for Glengarry-Prescott-Rus- sell. “Hearing their stories, memories, and reflections from that unforgettable season was both inspiring and heartwarming.” Prescott-Russell-Cumberland Member of Parliament (MP) Giovanna Mingarelli joined Sarrazin, Zanth, and the captain of the 1976 team, Luc Prud’homme, for the ceremonial faceoff between the current captain of the present day Nationals, Mathys Laurent, and the captain of the Lumber Kings, Solomon Tucker. «Their win is part of Rockland’s story, and it still fuels local pride across our community

Vital Dinis scored twice, while Alex Kelloway and Jérémy Belleau also scored for the visiting team.
