Summer Camp Guide 2025 NEW YORK LOVES KIDS KIDS

Editor’s Note Welcome to New York Loves Kids’ very first summer camp magazine. Summer camp is an incredible opportunity for children, providing them with a chance to learn, grow, and make lifelong friends. This magazine features a range of options - day camps, and sleepaway camps - ensuring there’s something to fit every family’s needs. The benefits of summer camp extend far beyond simply keeping kids busy during the summer months. Camps offer an environment where children can gain independence, develop new skills, and step outside their comfort zones. Whether they’re learning to paddle a canoe or creating a piece of art, kids are continuously discovering what they are capable of achieving. One of the key aspects of summer camp is the friendships that are formed. Campers often return year after year to see familiar faces and create new bonds. These friendships are special, sometimes lasting well beyond the campfires and s’mores. For parents, knowing that their children are in a safe and nurturing environment is

crucial. Camps prioritize the well-being of their campers, offering a structured setting with experienced staff who are dedicated to providing the best care. This peace of mind allows parents to focus on their own work and commitments, knowing their children are in good hands. As you browse through this magazine, you’ll find a variety of camps that cater to different interests and age groups. Whether your child is into sports, arts, science, or nature, there’s a camp that will spark their curiosity and enthusiasm. Each camp offers unique programs that encourage creativity and learning, all while ensuring kids are having fun. I encourage you to explore the options available and consider the incredible experiences that summer camp can offer your child. The memories and skills they gain will last a lifetime, shaping their growth and development in meaningful ways. Enjoy discovering the possibilities in these pages, and here’s to a fantastic summer filled with adventure and new friendships! Laurie Mackie, CEO, New York Loves Kids

Sleepaway Camp Vs Day Camp.

Why Summer Day Camp Is A Great Choice For Your Child Considering summer day camp for your child? It’s a decision packed with benefits! Camps are more than just a break from school—they’re a chance for kids to learn, grow, and have fun. Firstly, camps provide a structured environment where children can develop new skills. Whether it’s learning to swim, crafting, or participating in team sports, camp activities encourage kids to step out of their comfort zones. This helps boost their confidence and independence.

Why Sleepaway Camp Could Be The Idea Choice Sending your child to sleepaway camp might seem daunting, but it comes with plenty of benefits. First, it encourages independence. At camp, kids learn to manage daily routines without parental guidance. This newfound responsibility can boost their confidence and decision- making skills. Camp also fosters social development. Living and playing with peers helps children improve communication skills and learn teamwork. They make new

Socially, camps are fantastic for making friends. Kids meet peers from different backgrounds, which broadens their social circles and enhances their ability to connect with others. Camp fosters teamwork and cooperation, essential skills for later in life. Moreover, summer camps offer a break from screen time. friends, often from diverse backgrounds, broadening their perspectives. Another plus is exposure to nature. Many camps are set in beautiful natural environments, offering a break from screens and city life. This connection to nature can be calming and refreshing for children, enhancing their well-being. of long-sleeved shirts and pants for cooler days. Remember to include a swimsuit if swimming is allowed or encouraged at the camp. It’s essential to have a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen to shield yourself from the sun. For those attending a wilderness camp, packing suitable boots and waterproof jackets for outdoor activities is crucial. Also, don’t forget to pack a pair of comfortable shoes for everyday use. Including an extra set of clothing can be useful in case of unexpected accidents or spills. Lastly, bring along a few items that remind you of home, such as photos or favorite clothing pieces. Sleeping Bag And Bedding You’ll want to make sure you bring a comfortable sleeping bag that is suitable for the temperature and conditions you will be camping in. Along with your sleeping bag, you’ll need to bring bedding. It’s a good idea to pack a pillow, sheets, blankets, and a sleeping mat. It can also be helpful to bring an extra blanket in case it gets colder at night. Additionally, don’t forget your pajamas and slippers for when you’re settling into bed for the night. Toiletries Don’t forget to pack the basics such as toothbrush and toothpaste, soap and shampoo, deodorant, and feminine hygiene products if needed. It’s also helpful to bring basic medical supplies like bandages, antibiotic ointment, pain reliever, and antihistamine. Depending on the type of camp, you might need additional items like bug spray or sea- sickness medication. Electronics When packing for summer camp, it’s important to think about what electronics to bring along. A camera or tablet can be helpful for capturing memories and staying connected with family.

Campers should also consider bringing a flashlight, extra batteries, and a portable charger in case of emergencies. Depending on the type of camp, items like GPS systems, cameras for nature photography, or binoculars for bird watching might be useful. Sports Equipment If you’re headed to an active camp, make sure you bring plenty of activewear, including a comfortable pair of shoes. If you’re signed up for water activities, you’ll also need to pack a swimsuit, goggles, and water safety gear. Don’t forget to check with your camp’s counselors or staff ahead of time to see what sports equipment is necessary or prohibited. Packing the right items will ensure that you get the most out of what to bring to camp and have a fun time playing and participating in all the activities. Books And Games Whether your child loves to read or loves to play, having a few books and games on hand can help them have an enjoyable time at summer camp. Books can provide a quiet escape from camp activities, while also providing a fun and educational activity. Look for age-appropriate books that they can relate to their own experiences, and bring along a few of their favorites. When it comes to games, there are lots of options available. Board games, card games, travel games, and even outdoor games like frisbee can provide entertainment both during down times and when kids need a break from

How To Help Reassure An Anxious Camper.

Not all children step into the life of a camper with ease. Anxiety effects so many children, and it can be difficult to know how to support that anxious child, and helping them to reduce their nerves and enjoy summer camp. For many it is the first time they have been away from their parents, and that in itself can be a very daunting experience. Below are some suggestions on how to ease pre-camp nerves. Our first tip is to speak to your child to help understand just what is making them feel anxious. Is it separation anxiety, fear of the unknown, or simply that they will miss their friends and the usual surroundings. A good way to start is to let your child have a role is choosing which camp to attend. Maybe even take a trip there on an open house day to familiarize the child with the setting, procedures and staff. Avoid focusing on what makes children anxious. Instead of asking questions like, “Are you nervous about water sports?” ask open-ended questions like, “How do you feel about doing some water sports?” Support your child and their concerns, don’t brush them off by saying things like “don’t be silly, you will be fine”, or “I don’t know why you are so scared”. Talk them through what happens on an average day at camp, what the facilities will be like, what the meals will be like etc. Having prior knowledge of what to expect in situations like this is a good thing.

Tell your child about your experience of camp when you were a child. Throw in a few funny tales to keep them interested and to make them think of fun times that they will have when they are at camp. If your child has never stayed away from home before, try testing out a sleepover at a Grandparents or a friends house. That way they will get a taste of what it is like to sleep somewhere other than home. Say your proper goodbyes at home – don’t make the processes of saying goodbye at the bus stop a lingering one. It will only make your little camper more reluctant to step on that bus. Try and not be anxious yourself for your child – they will sense this. You have been to camp, you know it is a fantastic experience so there is no need for you as a parent to feel anxious. Make sure the camp staff know in advance of any learning issues, night terrors, bed wetting etc. The counsellors will then be best equipped to support your child. Finally, make sure that you as a parent have packed all of the essentials on the pack list. The last thing that your camper needs is to discover that swimwear or toothbrush is missing at the other end. That will only add to the anxiety of being away from home. And, relax – your camper will be just fine. You can rest assured that they will be having the time of their lives.

Online resources can also be instrumental, offering a wealth of reviews and ratings. As you dissect various summer camps, it’s crucial to scrutinize certain aspects. These include the camp’s underlying philosophy, the qualifications of the staff, the number of campers per counselor, the safety protocols in place, and the camp’s schedule flexibility. Reach

child is distinctive in their interests and personality, it is essential to find a summer camp that suits them best. Here are some categories you might come across: Traditional camps: These camps offer an assortment of activities, including sports, arts and crafts, and outdoor escapades, providing children a varied experience. Special interest camps: These focus on a particular activity or subject, such as science, music, drama, or a specific sport, perfect for children eager to hone a specific skill. Overnight camps: Also known as sleepaway camps, these camps provide a full-time camping experience with round- the-clock activities, offering children a taste of independence. Special needs camps: Tailored to children with particular physical, emotional, or developmental needs, these camps ensure an inclusive and supportive environment. Each type offers unique experiences, so considering your child’s interests, comfort levels, and abilities is crucial in this selection process. Determining The Right Summer Camp For Your Child Making the right summer camp choice involves open communication with your child. Engage them in a conversation about their expectations and hopes for their summer experience. Do they envision themselves exploring a particular hobby or making new friends? Understanding their comfort level with staying away from home overnight is also key to decide between day or sleepaway camps. The unique traits of your child’s age, personality, and specific

about a particular camp can be an excellent indicator of a good fit.

Preparing Your Child For The Summer Camp Experience Once you’ve chosen the perfect summer camp, the next phase involves getting your child ready for their exciting adventure. It’s important to have conversations about what to anticipate at camp, allaying any concerns they might have. Teaching them practical skills such as packing their essentials, doing a simple laundry run, or applying sunscreen properly can boost their confidence and independence. Ensure your child is familiar with any rules they’ll need to abide by at the camp and highlight the significance of treating others with respect. While summer camp is all about having a great time, it’s also an opportunity for personal development, building resilience, and cultivating independence.

Brooklyn Preschool of Science Summer Preschool is a place where a child’s sense of wonder is the star of the show. Our integrated science-based curriculum embraces children’s innate curiosity and provides a foundation for meaningful math, language, and literacy development. We believe in the lifelong benefits of early experiences with STEM and in fostering a joyous love of learning. At Brooklyn Preschool of Science, we handle insects, build simple machines, and excavate for fossils. We ask questions about the world around us. We observe, predict, experiment, and measure. We love it when kids ask Why. Why Science? Why is the sky blue? Why do flowers need water? Children ask questions endlessly. Science taps into their deep need to learn about how the world works. Positive early experiences with STEM subjects have been shown to contribute to future success in school and life. Scientists will have specialists, outdoor time, and more. As always, we are a place to grow, play, and learn through hands-on, inquiry-based science.

Participants will receive private lessons, enrich their musical knowledge and abilities, and perform as part of a rock ensemble. All skill levels are welcome! Campers will practice their instrument of choice — guitar, bass, piano, or drums — and prepare for a live performance at our camp concert. In the classroom, they will explore influential musicians across genres, produce original songs, and engage with music theory concepts. Additional activities include T-shirt and poster-making, music circles, and daily playtime at a nearby park. The camp runs Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM, with options for early drop-off and late pick-up at additional cost. Campers must bring their own lunches, though healthy snacks and drinks will be provided throughout the day. Above all, having fun is a requirement for all campers and counselors!

Camp Lee Mar is a special needs camp that offers a traditional overnight summer camp experience. This allows our campers with special needs to enjoy all the fun and social experiences of a summer camp and gain valuable life skills. Our goal is the development of the whole child. Our campers, ages 7-21, develop skills in the areas of independent living, social and communication skills, self-advocacy, and academics. Through a variety of recreational activities and classic camp culture, campers are supported and encouraged to meet their full potential. Not only do we strive to give campers these skills during their weeks at camp, but we also grow their confidence and knowledge to carry these invaluable skills into their school year. The Camp Lee Mar team works with parents, their child and respective IEP, to create the best programming for a successful summer! Our philosophy has remained a constant through the 70+ years we have been serving the lives of children with special needs.
