A MESSAGE FROM OUR HEADTEACHER
during the day and this morning about all the different activities. I would like to thank all the parents, carers and members of our wider community who contributed to the day by delivering careers’ talks, creative workshops or university lectures to students. We also held a Year 11 Parent Presentation in the evening to complement Michele Miller’s presentation to students and it was wonderful to hear such positive feedback at the end of the evening. Further information about the day will feature in the next edition of the school magazine. It was great to see so many pupils providing or purchasing cakes at the Macmillan Cake Sale last week. The final total made for the charity was a fantastic £994.88. Next week we are holding a non-uniform day to support the work of Show Racism the Red Card. Donations can be made through ParentPay accounts this week - thank you in advance for your support. Thank you to all the families who attended last week’s Year 7 Bingo evening hosted by our wonderful FOW, Friends of Waldegrave. It was a lovely evening and great to see everyone having so much fun and making new friends.

HEALTH AND WELLBEING
As the wintry weather creeps young people may be spending less time socialising in person and more time online. In light of this, and World Mental Health Day on 10th October, it seemed a good time to consider digital wellbeing again. Digital wellbeing is about how the internet and technology can make us feel, including the impact on; our emotions, mental health and wellbeing, as well as our physical health and wellbeing. Technology and the internet should be there to enhance and simplify our lives, however, not all online experiences are positive for young peo- ple. They may be caught up in what ChildNet terms ‘Digital Drama’ or see distressing content. Childnet has some really useful tips for promoting digital wellbeing and conversation starters that parents can use. If you would like to sign up for the Breck Foundation parents online safety workshop mentioned last week, please complete this Google form.

A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 8
Year 8 had a fantastic Drop Down Day this week which was focused on African Arts. The students took part in many different activities such as: Nigerian Drumming, Afrobeats Dance Fusion, Griots - African Storytelling, African Fabric Prints, African Jewellery Making and finally they took part in an African Team Quiz. It was wonderful to see Year 8 engaging with the activities and enjoying the day, I do encourage you to speak to your child at home and ask them to share with you what they found interesting or insightful about the day. We had a fantastic Black History Month assembly on Wednesday with Mrs Dhir and students from Year 11. I hope that Year 8 found the assembly inspiring and thought provoking. Our top three forms for epraise this week are: 8 PUN in first place with 422, followed by 8EDA 408 and in third is 8 PIR with 371. The following students are top of the individual leaderboard for Year 8: Marharyta K 8PIR with 46, followed by Ameera F-H 8PUN with 26, and Yovela H 8PIR 25. Well done ALL! Last week the Year 8 Football Team showed a great amount of camaraderie joining forces with Year 7 to convincingly win two matches - A great achievement! See the Sports Fixtures section for the full match report. We are delighted to announce the launch of the Readathon for students in Years 7-9. Each year the Waldegrave English Department raises money for an amazing charity called Read for Good, as well as supporting a good cause this forms part of our commitment to encourage reading for pleasure. This year the Readathon runs from October 14 - November 11, when pupils are asked to seek sponsorship for reading from as little as £1. All funds will go towards providing books and reading sessions for children in hospital, as well as for books for our school library. You will find a link for payment on Parent Pay, as we can’t take cash from students. Thank you in advance for your support. This coming Friday is Wear it Red day when students are invited to wear red clothes in support of the charity Show Racism the Red Card. A reminder that students have been asked to ensure that they are wearing lanyards at all times whilst on school premises.
MRS LYDDON, HEAD OF YEAR 8
BOOK OF THE MONTH
Northern Lights by Philip Pullman
The first book of a majestic fantasy trilogy, Northern Lights introduces readers to the bold heroine, Lyra. Set in a sideways world, where everyone has a daemon in animal form, the story opens with the ominous news that children are going missing, which begins Lyra’s quest for knowledge. This is a magical book, which is wonderful to read together with children, perhaps paired with the relatively recent BBC adaptation.

Last week we had a great success in the Year 10/11 Richmond Borough Netball Tournament , coming first by winning all their pool games bar one, making it to the semi-finals where they played St Richard Reynolds. The semi final game ended 8-5 to Waldegrave, meaning they were to play Christs in the final. Waldegrave fought so hard to keep their lead through- out the final, with the game finishing with just 1 goal in it. Waldegrave won 8-7, winning the whole tournament!
On the same day, the Year 10’s also took part in the Year 10 Richmond Borough Netball Tournament. They worked very hard in their pool games , beating Richmond Upon Thames School but unfortunately losing to the other teams. Our Year 9 Netball Team also had a match last week where after being behind for the first three quartes of the game, they valiantly fought back to achieve a draw. We had our first football fixtures of the academic year with our Year 7s and 8s playing away against Turing and Twickenham Schools. They played fantastically, winning both matches by creating changes, while preventing any opportunities for the other teams to score. All our players should be proud of their efforts and teamwork.
