A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 7
We are delighted to announce the launch of the Readathon for students in Years 7-9. Each year the Waldegrave English Department raises money for an amazing charity called Read for Good, as well as supporting a good cause this forms part of our commitment to encourage reading for pleasure. This year the Readathon runs be- tween October 14th and November 11th, when we will be asking pupils to seek sponsorship for reading from as little as £1. All funds raised will go towards providing books and reading sessions for children in hospital, as well as some being used to get more books for our school library. Over the last 20 years we have raised over £50,000 for this charity and we appreciate any money that students are able to collect. You will find a link for payment on Parent Pay, as we can’t take cash from students. Thank you in advance for your support. Last week students in Years 7 and 8 played in the first football match of the season. It was a pleasure to accom- pany them to this match with coach Ms Lambert. You can read more details about this match in the Sports Fixtures section further on in the bulletin. This week saw the first Drop Down Day of the school year. Year 7 had a very enjoyable day at the cinema and bowling in Kingston. We look forward to sharing some of the year 7 thoughts about their day in next week’s bulletin.
Well done to 7PCO who top the Epraise tutor group leaderboard, with 7PFO in second place and 7ESU in third.
Coming up next week, the Year 7/8 football team have their second match of the season against Hampton High on Monday after school. Good luck! We would also like to remind you that next Friday is Wear it Red day when students are invited to wear red clothes in support of the charity Show Racism the Red Card.
MRS BASHFORD-HYNES, HEAD OF YEAR 7
BOOK OF THE MONTH
Northern Lights by Philip Pullman
The first book of a majestic fantasy trilogy, Northern Lights introduces readers to the bold heroine, Lyra. Set in a sideways world, where everyone has a daemon in animal form, the story opens with the ominous news that children are going missing, which begins Lyra’s quest for knowledge.
This is a magical book, which is wonderful to read together with children, perhaps paired with the relatively recent BBC adaptation.
