FORMER STAFF NEWS A multitude of Shackletonrelated exhibitions popped up last year, but Shackleton’s Legacy and the Power of Early Antarctic Photography at the Royal Geographical Society held special interest for the College community. Curated by Dr Jan Piggott, former Keeper of Archives, it drew on original evidence to document the role that photography and literature played throughout Shackleton’s life. At the start of last year, former schoolmaster Martyn Grimley was named president of the Cheshire Union of Golf Clubs and led the Union into its second centenary, organising and delivering more than 50 championships, tournaments and matches over the season. Douglas Kuehn, former Head of Economics, recently published the third book in his series of historical novels, The Addlestone Chronicles. Set in 1936 Ireland, Magdalene , continues the story of two English couples who work as spies for MI5 and MI6 as they attempt to block known leaks that have been reaching Nazi Germany from Dublin. Magdalene is available to purchase through AuthorHouse, and an audiobook is being prepared for the first novel in the trilogy, Addlestone.

FORMER STAFF DEATHS Peter Rees (1931 - 2023)

BITESIZE NEWS The Honourable Andrew Ritchie KC (71-78) was appointed as a High Court Judge, a much-deserved appointment for Andrew who has enjoyed 36 years of practice at the Bar.

HSH Prince Bhisatej Rajani (39-41), the eldest surviving member of the Thai Royal Family, died in July at the age of 100.

Peter was appointed as a Teacher of Chemistry in 1956 after three years in the Instructor Branch of the Royal Navy, with whom he retained an active connection throughout his working life. His ability as a teacher was immediately evident, and resulted in an unusually rapid promotion to Head of Chemistry in 1961. After becoming Head of Science, he was later promoted to Deputy Master in 1989. Peter became an expert user of computer systems and, where none previously existed, an expert programmer of new ones. Always the innovator, he introduced the first booklet giving advice about university entry to boys in the Remove and overhauled the Master’s Report to the Governors. Peter was known for his humour, his resolution in representing the interests of the Common Room, and his active involvement in the professional development of his colleagues. A man of great integrity and wisdom, Peter served the College supremely well during his 35 years as a schoolmaster of naval rectitude. Robert ‘Bob’ Alexander (1936 - 2022) Bob was Clerk to the Governors at Dulwich College between 1987 and 1998. He was immensely proud of his work, both at the College, and at the Dulwich Foundation, working with Alleyn's School, JAGS, Christ's Chapel and the Dulwich Picture Gallery. A true gentleman, he was very highly regarded by all who worked with him, he was praised for his warm and collaborative style and described by one colleague as a ‘tower of strength who saw the College through some difficult times’. Anthony ‘Tony’ Binns (1963 - 2022) Tony joined the College as an English teacher in 1988, leaving in 2014 to become Deputy Head External at Mill Hill School. Many will remember Tony as an English teacher, others as the editor of The Alleynian or Director of Marketing at the College. A group representing The Alleynian attended Tony's funeral in August, and later gathered a group of OAs who had contributed to the magazine during his time as editor. Everyone in attendance had learnt so much, and derived so much enjoyment, from their involvement in the magazine under Tony’s tutelage and thought it fitting to raise a glass in his memory. Raymond ‘Ray’ Payne (1928 – 2022) Ray was appointed Head of Mathematics at the College in the summer of 1966 and under his leadership Maths became an increasingly attractive A Level option. Ray's own enthusiasm for his subject was inextinguishable; for years his breaks were spent solving problems on the backs of old envelopes at the request of his colleagues. He later became Deputy Master and Director of Studies, and he played a key role in the development of a curriculum which provides an exceptional degree of subject choice. Ray was an outstanding schoolmaster, whose satisfaction at the distinction of his own career consistently took second place to his pleasure at the achievements of the College as a whole and those of its pupils. His influence on those achievements, and his personal contribution to them, cannot be overstated.

The Reverend Canon Dr Martin

In April, Tom Hashemi (99-06) will be cycling 2,000 kilometres from London to Lviv to raise funds for Mines Advisory Group (MAG) to carry out essential mine clearance in Ukraine. Up to 160,000 square kilometres of Ukraine is thought to be contaminated by mines and unexploded ordnance, that is an area 100 times the size of Greater London. Tom is aiming to raise £20,000 - enough to remove around 40 landmines. His extraordinary journey will take 16 days, including two rest day and he will cover an average distance of 140km a day. Any donations would be hugely appreciated, as would some company for any of the 14 legs of the journey. The more who take part, the greater the impact!
