The College has joined forces with Tulse Hill and Dulwich Hockey Club to deliver hockey coaching to children with sporting enthusiasm or with potential sporting ability but who, perhaps through their circumstances, have not had the opportunity to play regular sport. In October 2021, Dulwich parent Marcia Gurney-Champion, came to the College to share her story about the creation of Spencer Lynx Hockey. As Co-Founder, Marcia’s aim was establish a charity that had at its heart the development of a programme of hockey that would be free to state school children in South West London. Inspired by the success of Spencer Lynx, the College formed a partnership with Tulse Hill and Dulwich Hockey Club; THD Phoenix was born! During the 2022 Summer term, hockey coaches from the College and THD Phoenix visited 7 local primary schools and delivered introductory hockey sessions to 12 Year 4 classes. By consulting with staff members at the schools, 25 pupils were selected and invited to join a free two-year programme of hockey coaching at the College. Next summer an additional 25 children will be selected to join the current group. The long term aim is to provide an unimpeded route into hockey, and any child wishing to continue their engagement with THD can apply for financial assistance from the club if required. The College supports the programme by providing facilities, equipment, coaching staff, Upper School boys to act as Junior Coaches and full administrative support. The College also helped to secure a grant of £5,000 from HMCK Charity (who promote aspirational partnerships in education) to cover additional coaching costs and to purchase new protective equipment (mouthguards, shinpads and gloves) for every pupil. THD Hockey Club crucially provides the head coach, Rémy Oliver, and assistant coaches including Matthew Stone (05-16). The weekly sessions began in September with a wonderfully diverse and enthusiastic group of children (and parents) turning up come frost, rain or shine. The sessions are intended to be fun and enjoyable, whilst teaching fundamental hockey skills and nurturing general sporting ability. The season will end with a fun Easter tournament, ensuring the children get their first taste of competitive hockey! The impact of your support As a College, we retain our enduring commitment to our foundational mission: to change lives and to facilitate social mobility through education. We currently provide financial support in the form of scholarships and means-tested bursaries to 36% of senior school pupils. The majority of awards are transformational and cover more than 75% of fees. The social mission is a defining feature of the College, and we are committed to substantially increasing our provision of financial support for those who cannot afford fees. In fact, we are working towards a time where Dulwich can be, effectively, a ‘needs-blind’ school where admittance is dependent on your ability, regardless of your financial circumstances. Our Bursary Appeal Fund today stands at £18.6 million and is a key component in supporting the level of fee assistance for talented boys that we offer. In order to expand our offering for the benefit of future generations, we aim to build the Fund significantly. Your philanthropy is a key part of us achieving our mission, and we thank you for your support.

“The children had such a wonderful time at the Southwark Hockey Tournament recently, we came 1st and 2nd. The children were thrilled and we as coaches can really see the difference in the children who attend the Phoenix Hockey Club, this in turn has had a dramatic effect on other children in school. Children are now sharing knowledge from their time at Phoenix Hockey Club during playtime and PE with their peers further developing children within the school community.” Sinead

Your support in words
“I love how brave and confident I have become playing hockey. I really enjoy playing and look forward to our training sessions each week. The coaches use really fun ways to teach us the different moves and techniques. If I keep improving I might get to play hockey at the Olympics!” Imani-Rae
“Those on a bursary bring a diversity of culture and of thinking to the College and enrich it as a result. The College in turn enriches their lives through education and access to outstanding opportunities and resources. Your education changes your life, particularly if you are fortunate enough to receive a Dulwich education.” Dominic Murphy (92-99)
