A MESSAGE FROM OUR HEADTEACHER
during the day and this morning about all the different activities. I would like to thank all the parents, carers and members of our wider community who contributed to the day by delivering careers’ talks, creative workshops or university lectures to students. We also held a Year 11 Parent Presentation in the evening to complement Michele Miller’s presentation to students and it was wonderful to hear such positive feedback at the end of the evening. Further information about the day will feature in the next edition of the school magazine. It was great to see so many pupils providing or purchasing cakes at the Macmillan Cake Sale last week. The final total made for the charity was a fantastic £994.88. Next week we are holding a non-uniform day to support the work of Show Racism the Red Card. Donations can be made through ParentPay accounts this week - thank you in advance for your support. Thank you to all the families who attended last week’s Year 7 Bingo evening hosted by our wonderful FOW, Friends of Waldegrave. It was a lovely evening and great to see everyone having so much fun and making new friends.

HEALTH AND WELLBEING
As the wintry weather creeps young people may be spending less time socialising in person and more time online. In light of this, and World Mental Health Day on 10th October, it seemed a good time to consider digital wellbeing again. Digital wellbeing is about how the internet and technology can make us feel, including the impact on; our emotions, mental health and wellbeing, as well as our physical health and wellbeing. Technology and the internet should be there to enhance and simplify our lives, however, not all online experiences are positive for young peo- ple. They may be caught up in what ChildNet terms ‘Digital Drama’ or see distressing content. Childnet has some really useful tips for promoting digital wellbeing and conversation starters that parents can use. If you would like to sign up for the Breck Foundation parents online safety workshop mentioned last week, please complete this Google form.

A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 11
Year 11 took part in Waldegrave’s Drop Down Day on Thursday which was a whole day off timetable and we focused on study/revision skills and exam preparation. Topics included; Getting your head in the right place to succeed, Effective revision, Managing time. We held specific topic revision sessions in English, Maths and Science led by subject experts to pass on some top tips and work on their skills. We interspersed these with wellbeing sessions focusing on kickboxing and yoga and in the afternoon held a whole year group bench ball tournament. Following this work with the stu- dents we held the family workshop in the evening, thank you to those who attended. This week we had an assembly on mock preparation which went over the exam expectations and rules around the logistics of the upcoming mocks and real GCSE’s. We know that exams are a time of increased anxiety, in order to support pupils and minimise stress on the day we ask students to check the seating plan on the Exam Google Classroom in advance and to be in school at least 30 minutes prior to exam start time. Congratulations to our Year 11 players who supported the Year 10 and 11 Netball team to win the Richmond Borough Netball Tournament last Friday! Please see Sport Fixtures section further in the bulletin for a photo of the team and more details. A reminder that the year 11 mock exams will start on 4th November when other students are not in school. More guidance about this can be found on the school website and the students are all members of the Exam Google Classroom, so please get them to show you where this is and all the information within.
This coming Friday is Wear it Red day when students are invited to wear red clothes in support of the charity Show Racism the Red Card.
MRS ROOK, HEAD OF YEAR 11
BOOK OF THE MONTH
‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ - Margaret Atwood This book follows the Handmaid of a wealthy family as she struggles to fight for her rights in a dystopian society where women are used as breeding machines. While those in charge use threats to suppress the desires of the Handmaids, nothing can stop the desire she has to reunite with her daughter who was cruelly taken away as the repressive state was gaining power. Atwood combines fictional aspects with real world issues such as oppression of women and power divide to create a story that will make you simultaneously devastated and filled with motivation to ensure that we continue to fight for what all women everywhere deserve the right to choose. ~ Isla

Last week we had a great success in the Year 10/11 Richmond Borough Netball Tournament , coming first by winning all their pool games bar one, making it to the semi-finals where they played St Richard Reynolds. The semi final game ended 8-5 to Waldegrave, meaning they were to play Christs in the final. Waldegrave fought so hard to keep their lead through- out the final, with the game finishing with just 1 goal in it. Waldegrave won 8-7, winning the whole tournament!
On the same day, the Year 10’s also took part in the Year 10 Richmond Borough Netball Tournament. They worked very hard in their pool games , beating Richmond Upon Thames School but unfortunately losing to the other teams. Our Year 9 Netball Team also had a match last week where after being behind for the first three quartes of the game, they valiantly fought back to achieve a draw. We had our first football fixtures of the academic year with our Year 7s and 8s playing away against Turing and Twickenham Schools. They played fantastically, winning both matches by creating changes, while preventing any opportunities for the other teams to score. All our players should be proud of their efforts and teamwork.
