A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 9
Year 9 students had a fantastic careers themed Drop Down Day this week, showing great engagement and en- thusiasm. The speed networking provided students with opportunities to meet people from the world of work and ask questions about their chosen career. I was very impressed with their overall focus during the day and look forward to hearing their reflections on this in the coming weeks. The current Epraise totals are as follows 1.9EMU - 442 points 2.9PWA - 422 points 3.9SSR - 454 points Special mention to the following students who are ranking in the top 5 on our Year 9 leaderboard: Ella R-J, Olivia We are delighted to announce the launch of the Readathon for students in Years 7-9. Each year the Waldegrave English Department raises money for an amazing charity called Read for Good, as well as supporting a good cause this forms part of our commitment to encourage reading for pleasure. This year the Readathon runs be- tween October 14th and November 11th, when we will be asking pupils to seek sponsorship for reading from as little as £1. All funds raised will go towards providing books and reading sessions for children in hospital, as well as some being used to get more books for our school library. Over the last 20 years we have raised over £50,000 for this charity and we appreciate any money that students are able to collect. You will find a link for payment on Parent Pay, as we can’t take cash from students. Thank you in advance for your support. We would also like to remind you that next Friday is Wear it Red day when students are invited to wear red clothes in support of the charity Show Racism the Red Card. M, Anastasiia M, Mia C and Ivy M. Keep up the amazing work Year9!
MRS MORTIMER, HEAD OF YEAR 9
BOOK OF THE MONTH
‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ - Margaret Atwood This book follows the Handmaid of a wealthy family as she struggles to fight for her rights in a dystopian society where women are used as breeding machines. While those in charge use threats to suppress the desires of the Handmaids, nothing can stop the desire she has to reunite with her daughter who was cruelly taken away as the repressive state was gaining power. Atwood combines fictional aspects with real world issues such as oppression of women and power divide to create a story that will make you simultaneously devastated and filled with motivation to ensure that we continue to fight for what all women everywhere deserve the right to choose. ~ Isla
