EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE

Act it out (10 mins) Activity: In teams of 3-4, participants take turns within 5 minutes to act out different emo- tions using only body language - no speaking is allowed. The team with the highest num- ber of correct guesses wins. Teams are encouraged to reflect on their answers and explore the reasons behind their teammates’ choice of “emotions” and methods of expressions.

8.1 DEFINITION Emotional intelligence is a learnable abil- ity that enables you to understand, rec- ognize, acknowledge and manage your emotions as well as the emotions of oth- ers. More specifically, Emotional Intel- ligence (EI) refers to the extent of your ability to understand your motives and emotions in comparison and contrast to those of others. from different cultural backgrounds. In other words, your level of emotional intelligence de- pends on your capacity to acknowledge, appreciate and understand the intellectual and cultur- al differences of others. Emotionally intelligent individuals consider developing four interrelated elements: (1) under- standing how people’s emotions can influence their behavioral actions and reactions, (2) de- veloping techniques for managing emotions effectively, (3) acknowledging one’s emotional behavior in relation to and in contrast with others, and (4) recognizing one’s emotions reflec- tively while identifying the causes behind emotional situations. Figure 8.1 presents these four essential elements for perceiving one’s emotions in relation to others.
