COGNITIVE FLEXIBILITY

Activity 2

In small groups, participants are guided to explore a phenomenon, such as global warming, from scientific, social, environmental and ethical perspectives. They are encouraged to propose multiple possible solutions to address the issue.

Activity 3

Students in a chemistry class suddenly experienced a change of instructor who was compassionate, flexible, open-minded and supportive. The instructor has been nominated to be the chair of the department, his teaching load is reduced and will not teach them anymore due to his new duties. The majority of students felt frustrated; yet, few students demonstrated the traits of cognitive flexibility. What do you think these students would do? As cognitively flexible individuals, what do you anticipate their reactions would be to adjust to the new situation?

Activity 4

In small groups, students are guided to solve a social problem from various per- spectives. They are guided to adopt the mentality of a cognitively flexible research- er who has the ability to shift between various research approaches.

Activity 5

In small groups, ask participants to first write a complaint letter, let them stop and start writing the main items of a business proposal. While writing the business pro- posal, ask them to start reflecting on their operational manuals. In this activity,
