PROBLEM SOLVING

The desert dilemma - survival challenge (15 mins) Activity : you and two teammates are stranded in the desert after your vehicle broke down. The nearest known town is approximately 50 km away. Daytime temperatures exceed 40° C and drop significantly at night. Your communication devices have no signal, and you only have access to the items salvaged from the vehicle.

Available tools:

A compass A flashlight (with limited battery) A flare gun (1 flare) 3 chocolate bars

3 water bottles A small mirror A map of the desert area A pocketknife A notebook and pen

You also notice smoke rising far on the distant horizon, approximately 10–20 km away. * In teams of 3-4, which 5 items would you use, how and why?

1.1 DEFINITION Problem Solving is a process used to address and assess challenges using a systematic and logical methodology. It involves four main components: identification of the problem, design of the solution, execution of the solution, and evaluation of the results. The four items aim to:
