A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 12

I was thrilled to see so many Sixth Form pupils taking part and supporting the MacMillan Coffee Morning last week. The cakes on offer were really spectacular and we raised a brilliant £994.88 for this good cause.

Yesterday, Year 12 students took part in their first Drop Down Day, which was directly linked to post-18 options. As part of it, they all attended a lecture with a University professor on an area that interests them. The day also offered students six different career talks, ranging from media and law to teaching. Students have been extremely positive in their feedback about the day. Next week we have organised a number of enrichment activities to support students learning in different curriculum areas. On Tuesday, to support both our Year 12 Philosophy and Ethics students as well as prospective medical students, we are hosting a lecture on the topic of Ethics and Abortion. This talk will take place in the hall after school and give them the opportunity to hear from Philosophy professor Clare Carlisle of King’s College London and consider some of the complex issues surrounding this topic. Our Year 12 and 13 Music Students will be going to see “La Boheme” on Tuesday at the English National Opera, while on Wednesday, as part of their A Level in Art, Year 12 students will participate in an Art Workshop which will support their coursework. Finally, next Friday, all Year 12 students are invited to wear something red, as part of the celebration of the 10th Anniversary of Wear Red Day in support of the charity Show Racism the Red Card. Donations can be made on Parent Pay, as we can’t take cash from students. Thank you in advance for your support.

BOOK OF THE MONTH

‘The old man and the sea’- Ernest Hemingway

A beautiful tale of a fisherman’s extremely challenging journey through the gulf stream, with a burning desire to catch what he has never been able to previously. The emotive effects of isolation and the physical toll chasing your dreams can take become more and more prevalent throughout. Hemingway masterfully combines carefully crafted and peaceful imagery of the sea with immense mental torment, as well as taking readers on a journey regarding the emptiness we may feel once our goals have been achieved, and perhaps don’t bring the fulfilment we dreamt of, we always wish for more. ~ Zara
