Delve into Durham’s Past Unique for being both a county and a town, our tour of County Durham is based at the fabulous Redworth Hall Hotel. We explore the famous Beamish Museum, magnificent Raby Castle and the chateau- style Bowes Museum. Of course, no holiday to Durham would be complete without time in the World Heritage Site of Durham city itself. PACKAGED ITINERARY Day 1 Arrival We arrive at our hotel in time for dinner. Day 2 Durham We spend today in the small but grand city of Durham, beginning with a visit to the beautiful Durham Cathedral where we admire its breathtaking vaulted ceiling and distinctive carved pillars. The Cathedral is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site which also covers Durham Castle and the buildings located between them. We spend the rest of the day at leisure. The city is compact so we can easily explore, with highlights including the stunning Castle, the Palace Green, the old marketplace and pleasant riverside walks. Please be aware that Durham city has some steep streets. Day 3 Beamish Museum Today we visit the Living Museum of the North, the Beamish Museum . This famous open-air museum, set within 300 acres of beautiful County Durham countryside, tells the story of life in North East England during the 1820s, 1900s and 1940s. We experience town life as it would have been in the 1940s during World War II, visit a 1940’s farm, pop into the Colliery and Pit Village in the early 1900s and take unlimited free rides on the Beamish tram. Day 4 Raby Castle & Bowes Museum This morning we visit Raby Castle , one of England’s finest medieval castles. A seriously impressive fortress standing proud and defiant, with a history of almost a thousand years. The Victorian and Regency interiors are as opulent as the exterior is imposing, showcasing porcelain and sculpture ranging from Victorian copper cooking utensils to The Raby Tapestry. In the afternoon we visit Bowes Museum a Grade 1 listed French-style château in the picturesque market town of Barnard Castle. One of the most important museums outside London featuring stunning galleries and top class exhibitions. Day 5 Departure After breakfast, we make our way home.
On Track for a Wonderful Weekend in Durham
County Durham is the perfect location for a short break. The region offers simply too much to fit into a few days, however, meaning we are spoilt for choice. Our short-break weekend tour includes a visit to the compact city of Durham and a rail-themed day with journeys on the South Tynedale Railway and Tanfield Railway – with an afternoon tea included for good measure! This morning we head north to Alston and board the South Tynedale Railway for a return journey to Slaggyford , following the former route of British Rail’s Haltwhistle to Alston branch line. In the afternoon we travel east for a return journey on the Tanfield Railway . We enjoy a relaxing afternoon tea on board a Victorian carriage, hauled by a vintage steam locomotive as it passes through the picturesque Causey valley, on the world’s oldest railway. Day 4 Departure After breakfast, we make our way home.
