Yves Drouin muscles his way into spotlight
Class event. All in all, he said, his latest entry in the Mr. Ottawa competition found him feeling more self-confident on stage. «It felt great,» he said. «I wasn’t as ‘robo- tic’ this time, and I also had the crowd on my side. I was very comfortable and I was going with the flow.» Now in training to make his mark next year in the provincials in Toronto, Drouin is also looking ahead tomaking a run at beco- mingMr. Canada Grandmaster. He wants to show that getting towards the senior years does not mean slowing down for anything or anyone. «It’s my dream,» he said, «to inspire people my age and show them that 50 is just a number.» Standing right beside him all the way is Diane, his wife and partner.They both share an interest in healthy living and exercise,
though she laughs when asked if she’s ever thought about joining him in competitive bodybuilding. «No,» she said, noting she prefers being the support he can depend on. «It’s been truly an experience watching Yves’ achie- vements. I’ve seen him realize a lot of his desires and goals.» Besides joining him at the gym for trai- ning, Diane’s other support talent is kee- ping her strongman spouse well-fed even though a bodybuilder’s diet is a bit limited. She enjoys the cooking challenge, which also involves meal planning and organizing. When not competing, and not working at their own full-time jobs, the two enjoy quiet evenings at home, good times with their children and grandchildren, andmaybe an occasional indulgence like a pizza or some popcorn.

Yves Drouin may be marking his fifth de- cade but the Hammond strongman is not letting age slowhimdown or stop him from reaching out for new goals. Drouin is relaxing, as much as he ever does, after achieving his latest triumph. He is now the holder of the Grandmaster title for Mr. Ottawa in the 50-years-and-older class after getting the judges’ thumbs-up for first place in his division in the regional bodybuilding competition over the Oct. 24 weekend. «Nowwe’re going for the provincials,» he said, chuckling, during a phone interview. Drouin has been pushing the limits of what he can do inmuscle-training since his days as a competitive strongman a decade ago. Over the years, he has added acting as a heavyweight bad guy in a superheromovie by one of Ottawa’s indie movie outfits, and then stepped into the squared circle as the Steel Warrior in Eastern Ontario’s professio- nal wrestling circuit.
