In previous newsletters, I’ve mentioned my brother, John, who runs QuickSumo
with me, but I have another brother, Jordan Hopewell, who ran a pest control company called EcoArmor. After some discussions, we decided it’d be best for us to merge our businesses, and Jordan will be taking over as the main owner of the company. I'd like to take a minute to introduce - or brag - about Jordan. He's the youngest child in our family, served in the Marine Corps for 4 years, is married to an awesome lady name Erica, and together they have a beautiful baby girl. He's very organized as well as detail oriented. Ironically when he was in high school, I vowed I'd never hire him. The reason? He worked for me for one day and then he quit. I reminded him of that experience four years ago when we hired him for QuickSumo, and he laughed. “Look, man, I’ve been in the Marine Corps., and I’m not going to quit.” He proved it. The Marines really helped him develop amazing discipline and intuitiveness; that’s how he found a strong passion for the work we do. Jordan is always getting his hands dirty along with the technicians, and his leadership and communication skills are top-notch. It wasn’t a surprise to us when Jordan wanted to form his own pest control business about a year after working with QuickSumo. Now, he’ll be the majority owner of both.
wall that can hold pesticide and distribute a fine mist of chemicals within the walls to discourage pests from the inside-out. A couple of times a year, these pesticides need to be thrown out and replaced. You might expect this to be a messy process, but that's far from the truth. Your technician will never have to go inside the house to empty out or refill these tubes. There's a panel outside the home with a portal to the tube system where your technician has access. It's highly effective, and while there are some myths that only the original installer can refill the system, any trained pest control technician (with the right tools) can do it. John and I are very happy about this merger — our business couldn’t be in better hands. What’s happening to us, you might ask? We’ll still be involved, and I’ll certainly stay in touch through the newsletter for a while longer.
However, now Jordan runs the show! We know he’ll do phenomenal work.
Best of luck, brother!
Josh Hopewell

LOOKING FOR YOUR NEXT HOME PROJECT?
Cooking in a beautiful, open kitchen is the dream of homeowners everywhere. Luckily, in 2020, many quarantined kitchen lovers have turned that dream into a reality. There have been a ton of kitchen projects trending on Twitter and Instagram, and if you want that natural and open aesthetic for yourself, try implementing the renovations below. A popular project has been to install more open shelving , and it’s not just because people want organizational space! By using open shelves instead of cabinets, you can make your kitchen feel larger while showing off those beautiful plates and cups! Whether you install a sleek slab of reclaimed wood or an industrial wood and pipe shelf, there are a lot of natural pieces you can use to make your kitchen look like it stepped out of a modernized village home. Pantry remodeling is another popular trend that’s improving the kitchen and adding space. Why does the door to the pantry have to be solid wood? If you want something more lightweight, try using a porch door. The see- through features can make the space more inviting, especially when painted a beautiful, bright color like emerald green or baby blue. Then, upgrade your pantry’s organization with wooden boxes, tall glass jars, and natural- colored containers.
Thinking of a bigger
project? We’ve got your back. One way to make the soft light in your kitchen stand out is to install dark flooring . Not only can
it contrast lighter furnishings and cabinets, but it’ll also flatter your lighting even more! To keep up with the bright, easy-going appearances, try using light reclaimed wood for cabinets. It’s visually textured and healthy for the environment! Furthermore, Carrara marble countertops can add sleekness to your kitchen without drawing attention away from the other beautiful accent pieces in your kitchen.

A s the cold weather begins to settle in Texas, mice and rats that have been living a happy, healthy life in the great outdoors start seeking warm shelter — unfortunately, that normally means people's homes. The National Pest Management Association (NPMA) estimates that over 45% of rodent issues happen during the fall and winter. With the major health scare going on right now, it’s best to avoid a double scare from these pests, especially with the bacterial and viral diseases they can cause your family. PREPARE FOR FALL — BLOCK YOUR ENTRYWAYS FROM RODENTS
It’s best to close off all possible entry points that rodents could use to get into your house in the first place.
First, make sure that you don’t have piles of dead vegetation around your house.
Those beautiful orange leaf piles shouldn’t stick around for a good reason: They’re an ideal hiding spot for rodents! Keep your accumulated leaves about 2 feet away from your home, trim the weeds, and never allow debris to collect against the house.
EASY STUFFED SWEET POTATOES
Who says a loaded potato has to clog your arteries? In this healthy version that serves four, a sweet potato base is topped with fiber-rich bean salsa.
Second, inspect your weather- stripping, cracks, and other weak areas around the house. Even if you’ve repaired them fairly recently, weather stripping and caulking can crack with temperature changes. Third, check for holes and gaps around cable wires, plumbing, or areas around recent repairs and home installations.
INGREDIENTS
• •
• • • •
4 medium sweet potatoes 1 15-oz can black beans, drained and rinsed 2 medium tomatoes, diced
1 tsp coriander
3/4 tsp salt
1/4 cup sour cream
• • •
1/4 cup fresh cilantro, chopped
1 tbsp olive oil
1 tsp cumin
If the holes around these exterior inserts aren’t sealed properly, you’re leaving an open entry for mice. Rodents, in particular, are known to crawl up sewage pipes and plumbing. Make sure to fit frequently opened windows and vents with screens. Also, don’t neglect to check inside and outside of the garage, as well as the door sweeps (if you have them beneath your exterior doors). We know you can spot many of these red flags yourself; that’s why we’ll offer you a FREE house inspection, so when our experts do it, this still won’t cost you a thing. Our staff is highly skilled in finding weaknesses in home pest defense and knows how to remedy every hole and gap. Call QuickSumo, and our expert team will make sure you’re prepared to ward off rodents and other pests for the fall!
DIRECTIONS
1. With a fork, prick each sweet potato a few times. Microwave the potatoes on high 12–15 minutes, or until cooked through. 2. In a microwave-safe bowl, combine the beans, tomatoes, olive oil, cumin, coriander, and salt. When the potatoes are done, microwave the mixture on high for 2–3 minutes. 3. Cool potatoes slightly, then cut each potato open lengthwise. Pull the halves apart to create space to spoon the warm bean salsa inside. 4. Add a scoop of sour cream to each potato, garnish with cilantro, and serve!

4 The Truth Behind the 21st Night of September
WHAT HAPPENED ON THE 21ST NIGHT OF SEPTEMBER? 4 Decades of Earth, Wind & Fire’s ‘September’
“Do you remember the 21st night of September?”
White and Willis proved to be excellent songwriting partners, but they clashed over one key element of the song: the nonsensical phrase “ba-dee-ya,” which White included in the chorus. Throughout the songwriting process, Willis begged to change the phrase to real words. At the final vocal session, Willis finally demanded to know what ba-dee-ya meant. White replied, “Who cares?” “I learned my greatest lesson ever in songwriting from him,” Willis recalled in a 2014 interview with NPR, “which was never let the lyric get in the way of the groove.” The groove is why “September” has stood the test of time, right from that very first lyric. For decades, people have asked Willis and members of the band about the significance of Sept. 21. As it turns out, there isn’t much beyond the sound. “We went through all the dates: ‘Do you remember the first, the second, the third, the fourth …’ and the one that just felt the best was the 21st,” Willis explained.
In 1978, Maurice White of the band Earth, Wind & Fire first asked this question in the song “September,” a funky disco song
that quickly topped the charts. While disco may be dead today, “September” certainly isn’t. The song is still featured in movies, TV shows, and wedding playlists. On Sept. 21, 2019, the funk hit was streamed over 2.5 million times. It’s no wonder that the Los Angeles City Council declared Sept. 21 Earth, Wind & Fire Day.
The story behind “September” is almost as enduring as the song itself. It was co-written by White and Allee Willis, who eventually became a Grammy-winning songwriter and Tony nominee. But before any of that, Willis was a struggling songwriter in Los Angeles living off food stamps. When White reached out and asked Willis to help write the next Earth, Wind & Fire hit, it was truly her big break.
The truth is that nothing happened on the 21st night of September — except a whole lot of dancing.
