A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 10
This Wednesday we had our KS4 assembly which focused on Black History month. In this assembly, Year 11 students from the Education, Diversity and Inclusion committee spoke about their family background and culture, sharing with other pupils their own personal history. Students will be doing more activities in form times following on from this assembly. This Thursday, Year 10 took part in Jack Petchey workshops as part of our school Drop Down Day. The workshops involved pupils doing a variety of activities, which included them performing a speech about something they feel passionate about. This was a great success and was really wonderful to see the students speaking so eloquently on so many different topics. All of the students who took part should feel very proud of themselves and hopefully this will have boosted their confidence when it comes to public speaking. Congratulations to Isabelle, Alex, Mia and Matilda who joined the Year 11 Netball team on the 19 September and went on to beat Christ’s School. A real achievement! Matilda Schaffer was Player of the Match. Everyone worked well as a team and played with a really positive attitude, despite facing a very experienced opposition. Congratulations to 10PGO for getting the most epraise points this week. They are closely followed by 10SPI. Well done! Students are encouraged to get involved in extracurricular activities, whether it is Music, Sport, Photography, or Art club. Homework club also runs after school every day until 4pm where there are teachers specifically assigned to support students in KS4. There is also a drop in Stuck Shop for KS4 Maths on a Thursday lunch time. Students should take advantage of the support available if they require any help. We would also like to remind you that next Friday is Wear it Red day when students are invited to wear red clothes in support of the charity Show Racism the Red Card.
MRS PORTEOUS, HEAD OF YEAR 10
BOOK OF THE MONTH
‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ - Margaret Atwood This book follows the Handmaid of a wealthy family as she struggles to fight for her rights in a dystopian society where women are used as breeding machines. While those in charge use threats to suppress the desires of the Handmaids, nothing can stop the desire she has to reunite with her daughter who was cruelly taken away as the repressive state was gaining power. Atwood combines fictional aspects with real world issues such as oppression of women and power divide to create a story that will make you simultaneously devastated and filled with motivation to ensure that we continue to fight for what all women everywhere deserve the right to choose. ~ Isla
