ST LAWRENCE COLLEGE

CRICKET WEEK 2025

Welcome from Head of Cricket

Geraint Jones Head of Cricket

I would like to welcome you to the St Lawrence College Cricket Week 2025. Although a short term, it is a very busy one with over 90 fixtures normally being played across all teams. Cricket does not just begin in the Summer Term, we have a very busy winter training programme which started upon return in September. I am sure the efforts from the pupils and coaches throughout the year will come into fruition during the week. Throughout this programme there is a snippet of what our pupils did this year, including our winter training programme, a little about the cricket we offer, our successes, a brief write up on U6th leavers and much more.

Please grab yourself a drink and watch some cricket throughout the week.

Director OF sport

Our much-anticipated Cricket Week is finally here and will run from Sunday 29 June to Wednesday 4 July at St Lawrence College. This annual tradition is always well attended and features a vibrant atmosphere, with great food, a wide range of drinks (both alcoholic and non- alcoholic), and, of course, plenty of high-quality cricket. th th The week opens on the Sunday with the always-popular fixture: SLC 1st XI vs Old Lawrentians XI. Full timings for the week’s events can be found later on in this programme. We are set for a busy four days with eight matches across four different SLC teams. In addition to Sundays SLC v OL declaration match, we are also hosting another exciting match: an Old Lawrentian vs Old Lawrentian T20 game. but there will also be a number of current SLC pupils playing as well. That Sunday will be more than just a day of sport. For those who may not be aware, Mr Tom Moulton, our Deputy Head, will be retiring at the end of this term after an incredible 33-year career, amounting to 99 terms of service at the College. To mark this extraordinary milestone, the theme of the day will be “99 Not Out”.

We’ll be celebrating Mr Moulton’s legacy with speeches, gifts, and shared memories in the Cricket Week marquee at 13:00. All Old Lawrentians, parents, and friends of the College are warmly invited to attend. Entry is free, as is the food provided throughout the day. The only cost will be at the bar, which will be open until 22:00. We have also extended the OL day by including Old Lawrentian tennis matches against our current senior teams.

Whether or not you’re playing, we would love to see as many Old Lawrentians as possible return for this special occasion. It’s a fantastic opportunity to reconnect, enjoy some great sport, and celebrate Mr Moulton’s outstanding contribution to St Lawrence College. Last year’s event saw over 100 attendees, and with this year’s tribute, we’re expecting an even bigger and more memorable day.

Looking beyond the Summer Term Old Lawrentian event on Sunday 29 June, th we will also be hosting more Old Lawrentian sports events run throughout the year.

Director OF sport

During the 2025 Michaelmas Term, we are hosting a girls hockey event and golf event, both which will take place on Friday 12 September. The girls OL hockey will be a 18:00 start on the waterbase located on Newlands Field and the OL golf (venue to be confirmed) will take place at approximately 1pm onwards (more details to follow) th As with the OL event last Lent Term, we will host a curry and drinks evening after the hockey and golf matches. We thoroughly enjoyed seeing so many Old Lawrentians return for boys OL hockey, netball and shooting on Friday 21st March 2025 and we hope this event will be as well participated as then. Reverting back to Cricket Week, it doesn’t just happen overnight. After months of planning, several days building, setting up the marquees and the many gazebos, generous sponsorship from parents and friends of the College and much more, the week has finally arrived. A huge thank you to the Grounds team who do a magnificent job preparing our pitches throughout the cricket season and the whole year in general regardless of the season. Without their efforts, we wouldn’t have pitches to play on. The catering team continue to meet their own high expectations and once again will provide us with a wonderful range of catering this week. The maintenance team often go about their business quietly but they often play a pivotal role in the operational side of Cricket Week. The Domestics team who endlessly provide us with clean facilities in what is an extremely busy week. For all of you, a huge thank you. Lastly, a huge thank you to my Games Department and of course our Head of Cricket, Mr Geraint Jones. After passing the baton over to Mr Jones in 2023, Mr Jones continues to deliver a wonderful and memorable week, which was my intention all the time I ran the cricket. Mr Jones has spent countless hour planning and delivering in what no doubt will be a successful week.

A huge thank you to everyone who has played a role in making this week a success.

But for now, enjoy the cricket and we all look forward to the weeks events.

After our last outdoor cricket training session, the Sports Excellence cricketers moved onto a six week fitness programme to begin athletic development improvements for the Summer term. Sprints, Yo-Yo test, Rapsodo Cricket, Military Fitness and more helped to develop key components of fitness such as endurance, footwork and strength. It was great to see the new additions to the programme get stuck in and physically test themsevels. From September through to April, all the SEP cricketers were involved in various training programmes from Early Bird sessions, Twilight training sessions, 1-on-1’s, group nets, batting & bowling clinics and the schools Cricket Academy. Numbers were low at this year’s Cricket Academy but we hope to have them pick back up for next year. We returned in the new academic year with Sports Excellence cricket training at Broadstairs CC. Due to a number of Leavers, this brought a lot of opportunities to younger and developing cricketers which proved to be of huge benefit. As always the batting & bowling was rotated every week to provide data for the winter programme.

The Academy is designed to push the players both physically and mentally but also provide them with an enjoyable environment that will prepare them as thoroughly as possible for the approaching season. The Cricket Academy is a stepping stone to the Sports Excellence cricket programme which starts at year 9 and is by invitation only. Throughout the Academy sessions we worked on all aspects of cricket from batting, bowling, fielding and wicketkeeping where of improvements were made.

Throughout the winter the U13 & U15 girls trained and competed in the Indoor Eights competition which was previously named ‘The Lady Taverners’. This competition offers 8-a-side indoor cricket to secondary school girls with over 1,800 teams taking part in both of these competitions. Not only did we enter the Indoor 8's but we also entered the newly organised Chance to Compete softball cricket tournament which is designed to attract more girls into playing cricket. The U13B team girls played their Chance to Compete competition on Thursday 16 January and our U15B team girls played their Chance to Compete competition on Thursday 23 January with both competitions being played at Ursuline College. Both teams did themselves proud and should be pleased with their efforts. th rd The main indoor 8's competitions were played on Thursday 13 February (U13A) and Thursday 27 February (U15A) and once again like the B teams, the girls did well. All four teams would have learnt a lot which most certainly helped throughout the summer cricket season. th th

Despite challenges, the girls cricket continues to show promise. Umaiza Malik and Millie Foster are both in the Kent CCC Youth set up and have had a lot of success with both the bat and ball this year. The current Y7 & Y8 girls had a busy schedule this summer with lots of matches and skill based training sessions. The Y9 girls did well and had their successes, and it was great to see a number of that squad represent the 1 XI girls in a few fixtures. st

This would naturally be great for their development and we look forward to seeing their development throughout the next few summer seasons

Through a thorough winter training programme we have continued to have success with many pupils representing District and Kent County Cricket Club Youth along with Sophie Callow who gained her International Cap playing for Hong Kong U19's last summer.

We have had many Kent Cricket Academy Scholars in the last few years which is testimony to the programme that we have in place and I am delighted that our cricket programme is renowned to allow all pupils to flourish.

We always cater for all individuals whether it’s their first experience playing cricket or if they are an established 2nd Class County cricketer and above.

We continue to provide all pupils with a great platform to build upon and it’s an exciting time to be involved in cricket at the school As parents would be aware, there will be changes made to the current school timetable at SLC. From September 2025, we will be having Saturday morning sport/fixtures and because of this, academic lessons on Saturdays have been moved midweek

However, this does not mean that we will be doing less sport and in this case, cricket. The Games Department are extremely keen on developing a well rounded cricket programme which will help our pupils reach their capabilities. More on this to come!

The Cricketer published its School Guide 2025, featuring the Top 100 Senior and the Top 50 Prep Schools in their bumper annual supplement.

St Lawrence College have been placed in the ‘Top 100 Cricket Schools in the UK’ in this prestigious guide for the fifth year running!

We are very proud of our inclusion and this achievement is testament to the hard work of Mr Jones, the Games Department, the dedication and encouragement of parents, and lastly, the effort and skill of every one of our talented cricketers.

All school entries were judged against an extensive set of criteria, which included a ‘compelling commitment to cricket in the curriculum, fixture programmes and coaching‘. Judges also took into account how schools kept the game alive after the pandemic, and how they work to ensure cricket remains a key part of school life despite the many challenges that lie ahead with school academic pressure

As Head of Cricket I am very proud of continuing to be recognised as one of the top 100 cricket schools in the United Kingdom. This is especially pleasing as it is my second year running the cricket at the St Lawrence College. I would like to thank everyone who has helped us achieve this fantastic milestone.

Cricket at St Lawrence

Cricket at St Lawrence College is in a healthy place and I am pleased that we have lots of talent coming up through the school and more importantly, we have lots of enthusiastic pupils who are enjoying their cricket

Reuben Young-Gadd (Y7) scored an excellent half centuries against Junior King’s Canterbury earlier this term and Rory Fellowes (Y8) scored a brilliant 76 runs against Sutton Valence School.

We continued our cricket exchange programme with St Benedicts College. In January for six weeks, Edward Smith and Max Symes Boarded at Bennies and fully threw themselves into their way of life. Edward played for their 1 XI whilst Max for their 2 XI in regular fixtures. Both pupils also represented the 1st XI and went on a tour which was very enjoyable. Both Edward and Max were fantastic ambassadors for SLC and did us all proud. st nd

We were also delighted to welcome cricket players Matteo Erasmus and Matthew Lewis along with their 1 team cricket coach at St Benedict’s College, Matthew Smit to SLC from April to May. Both boys showcased their talent within the squad with several good performances. Both of these players were presented their Players Caps and played a huge role within a young and developing team. st In January 2026 we will look to send two more cricketers over to South Africa with current Y11 pupils and 1st XI players Jenson Cutts and Tom Ryeland

A few truly superb milestones were reached this year.

On Wednesday 18 June, the 1 XI played the prestigious MCC fixture which is always a much anticipated fixture. 1 XI captain Olly Skelton (pictured right) not only took five wickets in the first innings but also went on to open the batting and score a century! This could not have been achieve many times so we have contacted the MCC to see if he can confirm how many times it has been achieved. This is a stunning achievement and one in which will be talked about for many years to come. Olly who also took five wickets against the MCC last summer, gets to visit Lords again next summer to yet again be presented with a plaque in recognition of his achievement. Olly’s overall macth figures were: th st st

Bowling: 10.4-0-53-5

Batting: 104 (109 deliveries)

On Wednesday 25 June, the 1 XI played the Band of Brothers in a declaration match at Broadstairs CC. After being 51-4, Jack Foster (pictured left) went on to score 122 runs from 90 deliveries which consisted of 22 x fours and 2 x sixes which was a strike rate of 135.6. SLC went on to score 229-8 chasing BB’s 294 to secure a well earnt draw. Well done Jack th st

On Thursday 1 May, our U15A XI played Harvey Grammar School in the Kent Plate Competition. Y10 Millie Foster (pictured right) took an impressive five wickets for 6 runs in 4 overs against Harvey Grammar School in a 9 wicket win. Since then the U15A XI have beaten a number of schools in the competition and now find themselves in the Final of the Kent Plate which takes place on Tuesday 1 July at Tenderten Cricket Club. Good luck everyone! st

On Wednesday 11 June, the Kirby 1 XI girls played Benenden School in a T20. Y8 Thara Aravindaksan (pictured left) took 4 wickets in 2 overs against the opposition but the reason why this was very special was because she took a hatrick where all three wickets were bowled in a row! Well done Thara, what an achievement that is.

Upper Sixth Leavers

Firstly a huge thank you to our U6th leavers for the contribution to cricket at SLC, we are grateful for all that they have done and wish them all the best for their future endeavours. Below are short paragraphs on the four 2025 U6th leavers.

OLLY SKELTON

Olly started at St Lawrence College in 2018 and has played a significant role within all sports. In 2024 he was 1st XI Vice Cricket Captain and this year he finishes his time at SLC being 1st XI Captain. Olly is planning on doing a gap year to gain some money and work experience. He is looking at pathways in the golf or PT industry. Along with cricket, Olly’s other passion is golf where where he is a member of North Foreland Golf Club where he and his dad regularly play. There is little doubt that he will continue playing cricket beyond school and we hope that he will return to St Lawrence College next year to represent the Old Lawrentians XI as our opening cricket match of Cricket Week. During Olly’s time at SLC he played three years of 1st XI cricket. He also played Senior hockey, Senior golf and rugby during his time at the school. As suggested above, he has offered a lot to the school in a sporting context. Olly was also fortunate enough to have a 6 week cricket exchange in South Africa during his L6th year where he learnt a lot whilst there.

We would like to thank Olly for all that he has done at St Lawrence College and wish him all the best for the future.

We would also like to say a huge thanks to Mr & Mrs Skelton for their continued support of St Lawrence College and for their generosity over the years.

JACK FOSTER

Jack started school in April 2010 and has played a pivotal role in all sports at St Lawrence College. Jack more recently has played three years for the schools 1st XI cricket team, two years for the schools 1st XI hockey team and dabbled in Senior rugby. He has also played some football and has represented the schools Senior golf team. Now that Jack has finished his A Levels he hopes to attend either City St George’s for his first choice or East London as his second choice where Jack wants to study Law. Jack’s passion is golf where he will look to join a University team or join a local golf club whilst being at University. Jack currently is a member of North Foreland Golf Club where he and his dad regularly play. Jack has certainly made the most of being at SLC, not just in a sporting context but by also buying into the ethos of the school and like Olly, had a great experience of travelling to South African as part of a cricket exchange programme.

We would like to thank Jack for all that he has done at St Lawrence College and wish him all the best for the future.

We would also like to say a huge thanks to Mr & Mrs Foster for their continued support of St Lawrence College and for their generosity over the years.

CAMERON CAIRNS-SCOTT

Cameron started at St Lawrence College in 2022 and has played a pivotal role in all variety of sports at St Lawrence College. Cameron has played three years for the schools 1st XI cricket team, two years for the schools 1st XI football team and two year for the 2nd XV rugby team. One memory that spring to mind was the unforgettable moment that Tower House won the Senior House Football Competition where they needed to win by three goals and they ended up winning by 4! In the words of one of his team mates “it’s unbelievable scenes Mr Simmons”

Now that Cameron has finished his A Levels he hopes to attend Newcastle University where he intends to study Marketing with Business Management.

Cameron has certainly made the most of being at SLC, not just in a sporting context but by also buying into the ethos of the school.

We would like to thank Cameron for all that he has done at St Lawrence College and wish him all the best for the future.

We would also like to say a huge thanks to Mr Scott & Mrs Cairns Scott for their continued support of St Lawrence College and for their generosity over the years.

RAUL FORSYTHE-ARTIGA

Raul started school in 2020 after joining us from local school Wellesley House. Raul has played three years for the schools 1st XI cricket team and three years for the schools 1 VI tennis team. st Now that Raul has finished his A Levels he is planning on having a gap year to try and go professional in tennis. Raul’s aim is to get his first ATP point this year and then subsequently go onto to play more ATP tournaments as we go into 2026. Although a talent cricketer, there is no doubt denying his talent in tennis and he more recently won the Maidstone County Tournament and also participated in UTR Pro International Tournament. For this reason, we will forgive him for playing tennis shots whilst batting at the crease this week! Raul has certainly made the most of being at SLC, not just in a sporting context but by also buying into the ethos of the school.

We would like to thank Raul for all that he has done at St Lawrence College and wish him all the best for the future.

Our History

Cricket at St Lawrence College has come a long way in recent years. Not only have increased pupil numbers pushed levels of participation in cricket much higher, but the schools new approach and ethos have driven success further still. The standard and the amount of coaching available has been central to pupils’ success. St Lawrence College has created a Junior Development Programme, Cricket Academy, a Cricket Sports Excellence Programme and adopted other elite practices such as video analysis and one to one coaching. Children are now being taught by high quality specialist coaching and better equipment has made a big impact on participation and performance to. The bowling machines enable pupil’s to regularly face 300+ balls in the nets every week. Cricket covers enable us to play more games without cancellations due to rain. Success has started to breed success.

Our aspirations, current challenges & how you can help

Our aim is to be one of the strongest cricketing schools in the South East. We already play some of the best schools in the South East and regularly compete. As we have more pupils playing and standards increasing, we need more equipment at a higher quality to raise individual performance levels even further. For example if six teams are training on an afternoon and only two bowling machines are available, the majority of players will be unable to use it. If you believe in fulfilling the cricketing potential of every child who plays the game, you can help them achieve this whatever our ability to give.
