THE DAY THE EARTH AND I HAVE IN COMMON HOW MY FAMILY CELEBRATES APRIL 22

father-in-law’s, my daughter’s, and my cousin’s, so we usually plan a family party. We have dinner, cake, and the rest of the trimmings. Usually, there are about 48 candles on the cake because everyone gets their chance to blow them out. After the party, I always try to get away to play golf, or, as I like to joke, “a game that resembles golf.” It’s a great excuse to get outside, and the weather is usually so nice that I’m itching for some fresh air. This year, I’ll be turning 39, and Meredith will be turning 9 — it’s hard to believe she’s that old already! It seems like just yesterday my buddies were busting my wife (in good spirit, of course) for not throwing me a 30th birthday party. She got a pass because she was still recovering from having Meredith just five days before. Nature has a special place in my heart beyond the fact that my birthday falls on Earth Day. I try to hold onto the premise of Earth Day throughout the year and be aware of my impact on the planet. We only have one Earth, after all, and we need to take care of it! My friends and family know how much I care about nature, to the extent that when my mom passed away a few years back, my college friends got me a magnolia tree as a condolence gift. We planted that tree in the yard on Earth Day, and it’s still thriving.

You might have heard that Wednesday, April 22, is Earth Day — maybe you even celebrate it. Since 1970, Earth Day has been one day a year when people all over the U.S. come together to take a stand for the planet, whether that’s by marching down Main Street, picking up trash, or volunteering to help clean out a river. Personally, I’ve always enjoyed celebrating Earth Day. Melanie, the kids, and I try to get out of the house and do something every year, and, of course, the kids celebrate the day in school with fun crafts and activities. But in our house, April 22 is extra special because it’s also my birthday! Jack, Meredith, and Ben get a kick out of the fact that I share my birthday with the Earth, and I’ve always thought it’s a pretty great coincidence, too. There are multiple birthdays in our family clustered in March and April, including mine, my mother-in-law’s, my

Volunteering at the community farm in Simsbury, CT

This year, on top of celebrating my birthday, Melanie, the kids, and I are going to try and do something to give back to the planet and our community. We love to explore the walking and hiking trails nearby and participate in outdoor sports and other activities year-round, but we’d like to do more this Earth Day. Last year, we did some volunteering at a local farm that provides fresh food to people in our area who are food insecure. I hope we can continue that this spring! Are you doing something cool to celebrate Earth Day? Since I’m still looking for opportunities to give back, I’d love to hear about it! Just remember to be careful if you’re adventuring outdoors this month. As much as I love seeing my patients in the clinic, I’d hate for you to sprain an ankle hiking or strain your back planting on my birthday. –Jarred Parker
