OTTAWA | Close to four dozen people from all across Canada received one of the high- est accolades for their community spirit. His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston presented the Governor General’s Caring Canadian Award to 46 volunteers during a morning ceremony at Rideau Hall April 7. The ceremony was scheduled to coin- cide with National Volunteer Week in April throughout Canada. Among the honourees at the Monday ceremony were three women from the Cor- nwall area and an Orléans couple. Denise Samson, Christine Steer and Su- sanne Tarle of Cornwall and Long Sault have dedicated much time and energy to the Cornwall Handi Social Club, an organization that Tarle founded to help provide people with limited mobility with the opportunity to share their common interests, struggles and achievements. The club matches volunteers with adults who have physical disabilities so they be- come companions and friends, taking part in activities like bowling, swimming and other pastimes. The three women also do volunteer work with other agencies like the Multiple Sclero- sis Society of Canada, Meals onWheels, and the Children’s Aid Society. Suzanne and Michel Thériault of Orléans are the president and vice-president of the Roy G. Hobbs Seniors Club where they are also daily volunteers, helping organize a

regular roster of activities for the members, planning special events, and making sure all seniors in the club enjoy their recreatio- nal and social experience. During their tenure at the club, the Thé- riaults have seen its membership triple. The Caring Canadian Award was created in 1995 by then-Governor General Roméo LeBlanc. His intent at the time was to recognize both Canadians and permanent residents in the country who are active in their com- munity above and beyond what might be

expected and who have made significant, sustained contributions without expecta- tion of either reward or recompense as they help their fellow citizens. The symbols of the award feature a maple leaf to represent Canadian spirit, a heart for the open-heartedness of volunteers, and an outstretched hand for unbounded genero- sity. The blue-and-gold colours of the award represent the governor general’s office. More information on the award and the year-round nomination process is available at www.gg.ca/caring.
