22. Peace in Tribulation “These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might haye peace. In the world ye shall have tribula tion: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). , Before I can receive Christ’s peace, I must be prepared for it. I must learn that His mission is to be my mission too—not the life of luxurious self-indulgence,, but the beatitude of the poor in spirit. Son of man, I shall only get Thy peace by moving in Thy sphere. Thy peace came, to Thee by going where Thy Father sent Thee. . Thou didst not get it first and then go into Gethsemane; it was in Geth- semane Thou didst find it. —George Matheson. 23. With Christ in Separation “Wherefore come out from among them, and be.ye separate, saith the Lord” (2 Cor. 6:17). The Bible rings with the cry for separation. . . . This call came to Abraham, bidding him to get out from country and kindred and father’s house; to Moses as the bugle note of Exodus; to the tribe of Levi, mus tering them at the gate of the camp; to the children of Israel, as they lan guished in Babylon, bidding them re turn to their fatherland; and along the resounding aisles of the New Testament Church, the wo r d s re echoed: “Be ye separate, saith the Lord.”—F. B. Meyer. 24. Recumbent Faith “The Lord redeemeth the soul of his servants^ and none of them that trust in him shall be desolate” (Psa^ 34:22). Dost thou trust—for that is the cream' of the word “believe”—dost thou trust in Jesus? Dost thou lean thy whole weight on Him? Hast thou that faith which the Puritans used to call “recumbency” or “leaning”? That element is in the faith that saves— faith that falls back into the arms of Jesus, a faith that drops from its own hanging place into those mighty arms and rests upon the tender breast of the Lord Jesus the Crucified. —Charles Haddon Spurgeon. 25. God's Provision “O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how Unsearchable are his judgments. . . . For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever” (Rom. 11:33, 36). God knew the frailty of man, that his heart was “desperately wicked,” and his “righteousnesses . . . as filthy rags,” that man’s only hope for vic tory over sin must come from the God-ward side. He, therefore, made

19. Inexcusable -Ignorance “They have kept thy word” (John 17:6). “Holding fast the faithful word” (Tit. 1:9). There are some things which are inexcusable among Christians. Chief among them is for one who has known Christ for any length of time to.be con tentedly ignorant of the Bible. ' God has given us His Word. It is our part to keep it; but first of all we must know it. We can neither believe nor keep a word we do not know. Noth ing in Christian living can take the place of personal and growing knowl edge of the Word of God.— Our Hope. 20. Pleasant Places “The lines are fallen unto me in pleasant places; yea, J have a, goodly heritage” (Pga. 16:6). Rotherham’s translation, “The meas uring lines have fallen for me in pleas ant places. Mine inheritance is mighty over me,” makes this more emphatic. The thought is that God surveyed a beautiful, expensive estate for David and placed him in the midst of it. The wonder of it cast a mighty spell over DaVid. He believed in an overruling destiny which fixed the bounds of his abode. He was. satisfied with all the appointments of the will of God, for even in the midst of sufferings and persecutions the sense of his heavenly Father’s love b r o u g h t him perfect peace.—Keith L. Brooks. 21. Christ in Me “Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly-above all that we ask or think, according to the pow er that worketh in us” (Eph. 3:20). “All that we ask or think” and more; “Above all” from His boundless store, God’s power flows, to you and me To meet our need “abundantly,” If Christ, not self, within us lives And His divine enabling gives; Yes, more than finite mind can grasp, “Exceeding” power for each task. Lord, open Thou mine eyes to see Thy kingdom task that waits for me. —Alice Louise Cary.
