kingly provision so rich, so sufficient, so exceeding abundant, that as we study it, we feel we have tapped a mine of wealth so deep as to be in exhaustible.—Selected. 26. Thanksgiving “That I may publish with the voice of thanksgiving, and tell of all thy wondrous works” (Psa. 26:7). Once again our glad thanksgivings Rise before our Father’s throne, As we try to count the blessings Of the year so swiftly flown; As we trace the wondrous workings Of His wisdom, power, and love, And unite our “Holy! Holy!” With the seraphim above. While we love to "count the blessings,” Grateful for the year that’s gone, Faith would sweep a wider vision, Hope would gaze yet farther on, For the signals all around us Seem with one accord to say, “Christ is coming soon to bring us Earth’s last, best Thanksgiving Day!" —A. B. Simpson. 27. The Ever-wakeful Keeper “He that keepeth thee will not slumber” (Psa. 121:3). Human love is wondrously self- forgetful and faithful. It 'will wear itself out in holy guardianship. But of no human friend can it be said, “He that keepeth thee will not slum ber.” Even in the truest, sweetest home there must be many hours when no eye is watching. But our Keeper' never sleeps. . . . There is never a moment by day or by night when the lowliest child of God any where in the great world is not under the eye of his Father, and cannot say in blessed confidence, “Thou, God, seest me.”—J. R. Miller. 28. Snare of the Tactful “Pilate, willing to content 'the peo ple, released Barabbas unto them, and delivered Jesus, when he had scourged him, to be crucified” (Mk. 15:15). What appears to be tact may some times be cowardice and fear. Pilate knew that Christ was innocent of any crime; his conscience took sides with Christ against His clamorous foes, and yet Pilate surrendered Christ ta those who cried for His death. Tact is apt to obscure the clear lines of truth and right; . . . Tact argues for delay in the. hope that the interval will change things and make the i r k s o m e decision unnecessary. Jesus Christ made it clear that no man can serve two masters, however tactfully he tries.—John MacBeath. 29. Thy Confidence “Be not afraid of sudden fear, neither of the desolation of the wicked,

when it cometh. . . . For the Lord shall be thy confidence, and shall keep thy foot from being taken” (Prov. 3:25, 26). Afraid? Why tremble now? Where fore the faintest, feeblest misgiving? The weakness of so many of God’s children is to look down—look at circumstances, look at difficulties, look at possible or probable trials, look even at imaginary ills—whereas the eyes should be “up unto the Lord,” and the thoughts be always occupied with Him. The child of God may do.with the immediate future as he does with the remoter future—he may leave it to God.—J. T. W. The Abiding Christ “If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you” (John 15:7). “Abide in my love” (John 15:10). In the first flush of joy at realiz ing the possibility of a life of victory, there is a tendency to hug our pos session—to make a conscious effort to cling to it. We have a feeling that if we do not strenuously concentrate our thoughts upon the indwelling Christ we shall lose Him. Perhaps this cdmes from regarding-the vic torious life as a blessing—a posses sion we can forfeit or lose. . . . It is a Person, not a “thing.” It is the Lord Jesus Christ Himself, who comes that He may possess us. He cannot slip from our grasp. He holds us. —The Pilot. 30.
