The origins of end grain Originally used extensively in the 19th century to pave busy streets across Europe and Asia, end-grain timber was valued for its ability to withstand relentless, heavy traffic. By the early 20th century, it became a standard flooring solution in factories and workshops, where strength, stability and longevity were essential. Unlike conventional wood surfaces, end-grain is formed by cutting across the growth rings of the tree, revealing the beautiful character of the wood rings and using the densest part of the timber.
