Deep in the Iowa heartland, architecture lovers and history buffs are fighting on the front lines of a secret war. They’re not battling Russian hackers or Chinese business moguls. They’re facing off against their neighbors over something many people never think twice about: the future of Iowa’s barns!

The group is called the Iowa Barn Foundation (IBF), and its members have defended the state’s proud agricultural history since 1997.
AND SUCC
“Barns, America’s symbols of honesty, integrity, and the American dream are disappearing from Iowa’s countryside at a rapid rate. With the mechanized agriculture of today, barns are no longer the center of the farm. But they remain poignant reminders of our agricultural heritage,” the IBF website reads. IBF protects “endangered” barns by encouraging Iowa farmers to preserve them and offering grant funds to make it easier. Barn owners who repair and protect their buildings without those grants can also secure Iowa Barn Foundation Awards of Distinction in honor of their care. You may wonder how IBF manages to source the money for these repair projects. Well, it’s gathered entirely through private donations! Iowans like our team here at Heartland Investment Partners are proud of our state’s history and the stories these barns stand for. So, we celebrate it by paying for subscriptions to the IBF Magazine and attending the All-State Barn Tour in September and the Spring Barn Tour in June. A barn tour might sound boring, but for farmers, photographers, and history lovers, it’s anything but. The two-day fall tour includes viewing opportunities for 60 historic barns across the state. Attendees can check out Dutch-style, English-style, tobacco-style, prairie-style, and crib-style barns in picturesque fields in Emmet, Dubuque, Des Moines, and every county in between. If you’re interested in historic barns and preserving our heartland, consider becoming an IBF member at IowaBarnFoundation.org. Even if you don’t live in the state, you’ll still get the biggest perk: copies of the bi-annual IBF Magazine delivered to your door.
